While bit rate is a factor so is bit depth, color space, dynamic range, frame rate, and resolution. I think there are several ways to improve consumer video that would be more noticeable than having a huge increase in bit rate. I hope that 4K Blu-ray supports 100 GB discs but would be disappointed if 4K Blu-ray is not competitive with UHDTV. |

Based on reference software (HM v10.0) in which 5 different bitrates were tested from 4Mbps to 20Mbps, you can see that perceived video quality (as viewed on a professional 10-bit 56” monitor by ‘non-expert’ test participants) starts to level off in the “good to excellent” region somewhat at around 15-16Mbps… ![]() Problem is, while the above experiment provides a good approximation of HEVC codec capabilities (i.e. reference software, code bases), it is believed by people in the business that with the current state of commercial encoding, that the above UHD parameters which I mentioned previously would require on the order of 25 Mbps or more for Rec.2020 compliant 4K 60fps delivery from stored content (in order to provide a compelling picture [larger screen size ( > 56”) might require a tad higher bitrate]. 4K Blu-ray (physical media) could deliver this. As an aside, from more of a business standpoint for content providers interested in adopting HEVC, it is expected that it will take about 2 years to achieve just 20-30% encoding efficiency (not to mention ~50%) vs. H.264 encoders for nearly the same encode time. |

A tip of the hat on soccer Sunday to
![]() Advanced pondering: How exactly did folks choose/determine the wavelengths for the RGB primaries (630 nm-red, 532 nm-green, 467 nm-blue for B.T.2020? (for one had to take into account LCD, OLED and laser technology in the thought processes). |

You also forget many early BDs used MPEG2 compression and their bitrates were nowhere near 6x (much less 8x) of DVD. |

It is a huge challenge. When my team is not playing on a Saturday sometimes I avoid all scores so I can watch the highlights show on Saturday night. It is extremely tough to go the whole day avoiding scores.

![]() ![]() singhcr, matches of extreme importance demand extreme measures, e.g. I’ve taken a ½ day off in order to watch the BIG one (http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/06/us-soccer-ghana ) live and in the meantime I’m currently through the 1st half of Portugal vs. Germany. So, what did today’s Portugal vs. Germany match remind me of, so far? While watching and suffering somewhat through the current broadcast quality [HD LDR (low dynamic range)] of the match, the value that future technology (HDR as an enhancement parameter to ‘vanilla’ 4K) holds….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ws#post8520754 |

Neutral postings about matches without overtly (or even hintingly) revealing scores or outcomes are the best way....since we're all on different schedules.

Keep pondering. A little background… Two sets of primaries were proposed. The Japanese proposed 635, 532 and 467 nm (635 and 532 fit with current laser technology). The Koreans proposed 625, 531 and 467 nm, because 625 and 531 nm are on the equi-hue lines of the red and green primaries of LCD and OLED. |

Excellent chart you put up; you should post that all over the internet
most people have no idea about bitrates; they assume higher is better but in reality once you hit a certain point, it means nothing to go higher and higher I have videos at super low bit rates that are better quality than ones at higher rates; once you hit a certain quality point, going higher does nothing except make the file bigger Quote:

For the sake of those who recorded the big match but still haven’t gotten around to watching it, I will spoiler-ize the outcome and my thoughts here -
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/team...ghana-24170237 I’m so proud ![]() ![]() Now that the personal euphoria has subsided (and I’ve cleaned up the beer I spilled on the carpet in my man cave after the winning goal), we are on course for the strategy ![]() ![]() ^ I will not un-spoiler-ize the above for at least another 24 hrs., then read at your own risk. Since it’s been several days now since the Italy v. England match, as an aside to Steed, don’t be discouraged, there’s still hope ![]() ![]() Last edited by Penton-Man; 06-18-2014 at 06:00 PM. ![]() Personally, I don’t have time to listen to an over hour long interview during the World Cup tournament and I would bet that nearly everything on it has already been discussed (accurately with specifics and in detail) on prior pages of this thread weeks/months ago….esp. in exchanges between myself and Richard Paul, Peter, Kris, etc. Not to mention the fact if you desired it directly in writing from the horse’s mouth (the SMPTE UHDTV study group http://www.worldbroadcastingunions.o...e%20(NBCU).pdf ) a heads-up was given just prior to the report being published online…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...tv#post9037061 With a follow-up link to the download (which is free to even non-SMPTE membership…now 3rd one down - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...te#post9044779 to the final report (an initial report was issued last Sept., also linked to on this thread) and I highly recommend it to those interested in the UHDTV topics. I’m a big advocate of SMPTE especially since there has been development of remote access (telecommunication) to technology committee meetings, which in the past required substantial traveling in order to contribute live and in-person. With that, as well as other improvements, I think that SMPTE has discarded its past reputation (rightly or wrongly) of being an *old boys club*. But to play devil’s advocate for a moment on this topic, the *power*, if you will, does not reside with SMPTE as their recommendations are not akin to a regulatory organization. The *power* resides with the content producers. For example, in the professional digital cinema arena, there are actually two types of DCPs…the newer one being an SMPTE DCP version, if you will. If studios really desire to release SMPTE qualified DCP movies (instead of interop versions), they have the power to do so, first by getting on the stick ![]() |
