First let me just express my personal sentiments on the major players involved so that people don’t get the impression that I have some sort of biased conflict of interest for the matter at hand.

I really admire Jim, heck, if only for the fact that he named his company (Oakley) after his dog places him in a special place in my heart . But, more objectively, he is one of the most innovative thinkers and do-ers (arguably thee most innovative), whom I know of and if Congress were populated by all Jim Jannards we would be a FAR better country for it.

But, that does not exactly make him an angel, for instance….http://www.boliven.com/legal_proceed...v-05841-LAP?q=

And if I correctly recall, after the Oakley vs Nike settlement was announced, Oakley shares fell and Nike shares rose….if that serves as an indication of who Wall Street believed that settlement was in favor of.

On the other hand, as we’ve seen, upper management at one Sony division can also be fast and free with the truth…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...lt#post6782166

To answer your question, I don’t exactly know what specifically RED is accusing Sony of infringing upon as Jim’s comments on that thread are just too vague as to applicability. My feeling is that he is *stretching* just because I know the mindset of the engineers at Sony’s Atsugi Tech Center for I think they would sooner run around the parking lot naked in broad daylight rather than copy or infringe upon something which was a credible patent from RED. Patent infringement legal implications aside, it is a pride thing with them.
Speaking of RED and one of their high rez cameras, i.e. the Epic -
Shot in ‘5K’, finished in 2K - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1623205/

Steedeal, Mila is going to Brasil for her first *introduction*. Well, I guess better late than never...and who the heck is Watford? some lower level football club? -

Mila Kunis talks to Chris Stark off the Scott Mills show on Radio 1 - YouTube
Watford used to be very decent side. They went from division 4 to division 1 in the 80's I believe.

Well, I must say, some of those Watford supporters have an unusual alcoholic preference while hanging out at their local pub…watch the clip.

Reminds me, not to slight our 3D aficionados, it should be mentioned that ‘Oz’ is also being distributed in a 3D version.

Isn't the 3D essential to the film in oz's case. Sepia to 3D as it were?

‘Essential’?, I don’t know…as that is for the ‘traditional’ 2D vs 3D *debaters*…..but, a worthy ingredient to the cinematic experience in order to make the storytelling more effective, I think, that is a safe statement for you to make…..on the forums at least.

Read the interview from the horse’s mouth himself, Sam Raimi , as immersive techniques other than just 3D image capture were purposely used by the Director (from http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/...rful-sam-raimi )...

"In addition, we played the opening 15 minutes in mono sound, then, when we get to the land of Oz, I took it from mono to stereo and then to fully immersive surround sound. The first time we enter this beautiful, strange land, we really need to feel and sense it thoroughly – I also dialed up the convergence of the 3D so it became much more dimensional at that moment – a modern tribute to the original classic."

P.S.
A humble minor correction to the above ^ quote, where Sam says dialed up the “convergence”, I’m quite sure he meant interaxial, rather than “convergence” but, it’s the thought that counts.

Also, on a more technical note for those wondering if and how much was a stereo conversion….given the philosophy - *I want my 3D NATIVE*, as native is better*, something not mentioned in the above Guardian article and which probably won’t be publicized until someone like Variety or The Hollywood Reporter does a piece interviewing one of the stereographers…

For various reasons (including the fact that the camera movement was too much for the stereo rigs) about 8 shots were converted by the following 3 entities:

Sony Pictures Imageworks
Legend 3D

And although not included on *the list* as a named entity here…http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1623205/...=tt_cl_sm#cast

Venture3D, which did about 4 of the 8 conversion shots.

Excellent camera but far from perfect. For example, during the prep, the Epics would periodically lose synchronization.

^ Plus, there’s at least a two frame delay with their onboard display…and twice that much with external 2K monitors.

^ The news article of which I’m sure people at DOCOMO - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...mo#post7197296
are reading today with some interest.

Given their iteration (see 4. Conclusion) of HEVC - http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/b...12_4_038en.pdf

The CPO of Netflix was quite candid and specific regarding a variety of topics. Very refreshing given the tendency these days for upper management at entertainment-oriented companies to give press interviews where they talk a lot but essentially say/reveal very little.

Yikes, the ‘pagemaster’ has moved into the 4K neighborhood . Hide the women, children and small pets!

Oookay, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and presume that you are offering a sincerely innocent news tidbit. Ergo, I think that mastering announcement to which you refer, has been met with candid responses ranging from ridicule to…amusement, by home theater enthusiasts posting on the internet.

You know, it’s becoming really difficult for me to concentrate with all the recent girly photos on this page. If ‘Canada’ posts something, I may become speechless.

To quickly answer your query, possible but EXPENSIVE….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...er#post5749061

Anthony is well qualified to elaborate further.

Not to be outdone by Netflix newsmakers, Astra says “We want to enable customers and other people to test it (4K) and this is what we will do this year to make it testable, so everyone can see what it is.”… http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2013/...ps-4k-channel/

Note: Apparently Astra serves 143 million European TV households (including indirect cable and IPTV reach), 73 percent of all European satellite homes and 80 percent of all European satellite HD homes.
