https://vimeo.com/203351189 Note to Dan, are you fluent in French? I ask because once in awhile, although admittedly it’s uncommon, I’m also sent collegial videoclips totally en français, from folks in Rennes which is a hotbed for technological R&D and I never considered posting them here because I thought that no members would understand them. |

Technical descriptions by Charles Poynton of terms relating to image appearance that are important to image signal processing in professionally produced digital cinema and video/HD/UHD (scene-referred, display-referred, mastering-display-referred, etc.):

The question doesn't really make sense. But overall if you want less banding, buy a 2017 sony tv with the new X1 chip, it has extra processing to eliminate banding on all sources you watch. |

LG OLED TVs aren't good @ eliminating banding?
Them Sony TVs with that X1 chip; affordable, good performance overall, the best? But all 2017 TV models and brands don't do 3D anymore. It's all HDR now, and some Visual Dolby. But 3-dimensional movie awesomeness experience is no more. Not in the 2017 models. * Penton-Man, DanBa; what's the best TV for No-Banding? With or without HDR engaged. Cheers, |

I'll take a stab at this one... These remarks are strictly limited to banding issues, not overall picture quality or any other elements of image performance.
I would say if price is a consideration, I'd go for Sony's 2017 X900E series and if the budget is bigger, Sony's X940E with the X1 Extreme processor is likely to be among the best. With all this said the Z9D would be my ultimate choice ultimate choice or a OLED with an outboard video processor. |

I like 3D and am sorry it's not on the 2017 line-up. Not sure about Sony's input lag performance, but their excellent video processing would tend to slow down the display's response time. However, in the "Game" mode all video processing is turned off.
Personally and professionally I'd recommend a 2016 OLED TV. The B6's recent firmware upgrade further reduced input lag. |

Your question is a little more complicated than a simple yes or no. People are recommending the top of the line Sonys because they are usually known to have the best processing around. But that doesn't mean they won't show banding. There are a lot more things that can cause banding: the display, the source, the player, the receiver, the HDMI cables, etc... There are people here that still see banding on HDR blu-rays. Sometimes its corroborated to be the source by multiple people seeing it on multiple displays using multiple players. But sometimes a change in setting in the player will fix it. Or a change of cables, etc... So I don't think anyone can guarantee if you buy a top of the line Sony, you will never see banding again. You just have to roll the dice and hope for the best.

But buying a TV on "hope for the best" is not truly the best tactic.
Is there a better tactic than that? |
