It will still be digitally projected. I wasn't talking about capture methods.
Oh yeah, like me! I prefer dvd over bluray don't i? Peter, many people like the film look and many people like football, get over it!

Ditto.

And yeah there won't be 4K plasmas but there will be 4K OLED's thank god.

I love how people readily accept inferior technology.

I don’t know how rigid the policy change is as it pertains to specialty IMAX 70mm film prints. The Technicolor announcement from just before Christmas certainly didn’t help, see the link below the Youtube clip….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...st#post8561347

Be that true or false, I always try to be a half glass full person and one silver lining to no moe 35mm film prints is that it should aid the mental health issues suffered by some theater employees….

When film is gone, what will all the grain lovers do, show their appreciation for digital noise?

Like I said, David (Mackenzie)…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...id#post8685615

As far as rez, this from the horse’s mouth intimately involved in the project…http://www.studiodaily.com/2012/09/f...m-35mm-and-4k/

At the end of the day, the chances of the typical movie-goer getting to see 70mm film is becoming more and more remote as time passes. Given that, if interested in the best presentation possible, when the occasional 4K DCP movie is booked (the last being zee Wolf.. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...lf#post8558447 ), much more practically relevant would be for movie-goers to choose a D-Cinema theater that has something like a Christie 4K projector, or a D-Cinema that *goes the extra mile* by removing the 3D adopter (which lowers the rez)… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...me#post7546009 .

The Projectionist - YouTube
Nobody with a sense of humor?

I found the Youtube comments from other projectionists funny…http://www.youtube.com/all_comments?v=tZKFFK4x4Fc

O.K. then, for the more intellectually serious amongst us, scroll this THR interview clip to exactly the 32min. 55sec. timestamp when these D.P.s (Barry Ackroyd (Captain Phillips), Sean Bobbitt (12 Years a Slave), Bruno Delbonnel (Inside Llewyn Davis), Phedon Papamichael (Nebraska, The Monuments Men) and Stuart Dryburgh (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) start commenting on the imagery replication (or rather, lack thereof) of current (8 bit Rec.709 1080p) Blu-ray video as compared to how their celluloid shot footage actually appears in a DI suite -

I enjoyed that projectionist video as well as the cinematographer's round table.

No, we will mourn a lost era and try to embrace a poor substitute. We might even spot one of those coloured dead pixels that occasionally show up on our bluray when watching a digital transfer. I can hardly contain my excitement.

Riiight. Especially since for the past decade or more the vast majority of films are harvested digitally off the negative right after it's been shot, not to mention the numerous digital post procedures further down the line. Your film prints have been nothing more than digital to analog conversions for years now. Information is lost in that process. Digital projection is closer to the original, and doesn't have gate weave, flicker, (etc) and all the other problems that further degrade the analog film experience.

So saying film prints now are better than digital is like saying FM Radio is better than CD.

This should tell you how successful Sony's 4k push has been...not very:

Sony Closes Technologies Unit, Lays Off Its President

7:15 PM PST 1/22/2014 by Gregg Kilday4886230EmailPrintComments

The latest layoffs also hit Home Entertainment Group and Imageworks VFX unit.

As part of its ongoing efforts to cut back the size of its workforce, Sony Pictures Entertainment closed down Sony Pictures Technologies today, laying off*Chris Cookson, who has served as president of the unit since 2008. New cuts were also made in the Home Entertainment Group and at Imageworks, the studio’s VFX house.

The latest round of lay-offs brings the number of jobs that the studio has eliminated since SPE heads*Michael Lynton*and*Amy Pascal*began cost-cutting measures last fall to around 50.

"As part of the Company’s previously announced efforts to evolve its operations, Sony Pictures Entertainment is absorbing the functions of Sony Pictures Technologies into various core businesses. Regrettably, Chris Cookson will leave the Company as a result. In related moves, SPE has streamlined technology groups across its businesses to accelerate creative and technological innovation. The entire Company wishes to express its deep gratitude to Chris, his team, and the other groups involved in these changes,” Sony spokesman*Charles Sipkinssaid in a statement.

Cookson’s team led the studio’s efforts to implement initiatives like UltraViolet and digital distribution and had been overseeing the transition to 4k, 3D and digital file-based workflows throughout the company.

On Jan. 21, the studio also held a staff meeting, announcing that it intends to move more of the Imageworks workforce to its Vancouver, Canada, facility.

When I was young film had a lovely organic look. It doesn't now. Explain that?

Not sure that article's entirely relevant to the uptake of 4K consumer goods, because it's about Sony's movie business (Sony Pictures Entertainment) which has been foundering of late, no matter how many 4K movies they make! Sony loves to present a united front with all of its businesses, but it's all bullshit because as soon as SPE started doing badly, they were on their own. I think Sony even made enquiries about selling SPE recently, and as it is they're making these swingeing cuts.

Regrettably, Bain & Co. (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...in#post8430565 ) and senior management don’t think much of the talent and wherewithal needed to be awarded an Emmy - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...ored-at-637433 .

As a side note, ‘paidgeek’ (also gone from Culver City) used to report directly to Chris. And if Bill leaves, there will be a significant brain drain from the technical trenches. For background, start the vimeo clip covering a panel from the last Cine Gear at about the 19 min. timestamp…http://vimeo.com/70117844

This is also a good time for me to give a BIG tip of the hat to the Hollywood studio Home Entertainment President who, I think, without a doubt, of all the Home Entertainment Presidents (from the Hollywood majors) did the most to promote the Blu-ray format and who will be stepping down from his watch in March. I’m talking about David Bishop ….a strong advocate of Blu-ray and someone who assisted me on more than one occasion in the Blu-ray movement.

He will be missed.
