A little enlightenment to the compression challenge should come in an upcoming (yet to be published) edition of American Cinematographer….as in sometime after August…..http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/June2014/current.php < not yet on the ‘Highlights’ list.

Until then, I’ll say that many large format folks have long held that DCI’s maximum allowable data rate of 250 Mbit/s is too low for compressing 65mm film scanned source in a visually lossless fashion.

Heads-up party animals….

One doesn’t have to be in Rio or a BBC Insider in order to view some tasty live 4K World Cup action. Londoners take note of a 4K (60fps, HEVC) sporting milestone….http://presscentre.sony.eu//content/...5&NewsAreaID=2

Meanwhile, back in the U.S., the wild World Cup ride continues - http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/2014-fi...ry?id=24319517

I’d of preferred to be playing Algeria rather than Belgium, but, the U.S.A. vs Portugal match was 27 sec. too long, so what the heck, at least we’re through.

Stunning finish to tonight's game. It was tough on the US, but the spirit and drive and determination of the team is damned near superhuman. Bravo.

Let's hope it's the catalyst for wider adoption of this wonderful sport. Penton man suggested that could be the case, I certainly hope so.

Indeed. It's ironic that a heroic failure might just be the thing that tips 'Murica - where organised sport is built around one thing, winning - into a full blown love affair with football.

A simpler YouTube video explaining HDR will be posted next month.

b.t.w., people won’t need sunglasses if the brightness of future displays is not extreme and room lighting ( https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...86#post8865354

Google has announced that they are working on new profiles for VP9 that will support 12-bit video. The new profiles should be done later this year and when combined with what is happening with HEVC it looks like future consumer video formats will move beyond 8-bit video.

I don't mind the idea of increasing the brightness so it is higher than 100 nits but some of the proposed HDR systems sound a bit like Smell-O-Vision. I am skeptical of any HDR system that requires water cooling for the display and/or having the display control the room lighting.

Still an awesome video though. Opening up football stadiums so that thousands of people can watch real football? You couldn't make it up. Seeing the sheer unbridled enthusiasm of your countrymen for my favourite game sent chills down my spine, because I remember when we Englishmen used to have a team worth supporting and when we had topsy-turvy nights like that. We beat Belgium in "overtime" in the round of 16 in Italia '90 (David Platt FTW, literally) and the US game was something close to that magical night. I say again: awesome.

Development and structure are obviously vital but things are looking up. Long may they continue.
