I highly doubt these new cameras would outperform IMAX film cameras at the moment, but I hope they at least keep the 1.43:1 aspect ratio. ![]() |

Thats pretty cool that Infinity War will be 100% IMAX.
I find movies shot digitally tend to look better as there are not errors and inconsistencies that you get with film (flicker, light banding, hair, dust, etc). I do find the HUGE step down in resolution a big problem though. There will never be any 'rescanning' for more content. Right now they are scanning 50 year old film at 4K resolution and are pulling more content. With the amount of CGI and digital negatives, I highly doubt we will ever get anything higher than the original master, ever. Tons of movies over the last 20 years (and many today) were finished at 2K. |

Some 35mm film with high ISO ratings actually have considerably fewer light absorbing crystals than even a 2K digital camera. Even high ISO 70mm still has lower resolution than a 4K or beyond digital camera. You can't just blow up a film print as large as you want anymore than you can do so with a digital image. |

Shouldn't be a surprise, they're trying to pass off a pair of 2K projectors as IMAX anyhow. I'm curious how the new 4K projectors will retrofit into the 2K 1.9:1 setups, I bet they'll just crop to 1.9:1. At least old films used models and optics for sfx and not cgi. Star Trek TNG looks great on Blu-ray, good luck resurrecting DS9 or Voyager with all that video resolution 'negatives' and video resolution CGI. Most films are being mastered at 2K still. Hopefully they push to something higher than 4K soon. |

That's the beauty of a digital image over film and practical models at least. As long as camera makers like Sony and RED keep pushing their cameras to higher and higher resolution we'll be well off. We're already to a point where super high resolution digital is nearly indistinguishable from 35mm and even 70mm film once it's projected. In theory digital has the potential for much higher resolution than film. Digital SLRs have already well surpassed the resolution of 35mm film. |

They start shooting by end of 2016, and the movie is only released in 2018, so there's time to work it out! |
