Look at it this way. They hid him because his role doing espionage work is so significant to the story, that he and only he alone will be the chosen one to end Thanos after this is all said and done.

I’m just glad they actually brought him to the screen. Very easy to just ignore the normal heroes in a superhero setting... unless you’re Batman!

The solar jewel gave him the intangible ability in the comics. He was able to function without it. He has been broken and rebuilt a few times.
