The show got me intrigued about them.

The Alexa 65 may not match up to 15/70 in terms of sheer resolution on paper, but even true IMAX loses quality once it's duped into a release print and the usual foibles of film projection (flicker, instability etc) sap that resolution even more. It still looks stunning, absolutely, but the dynamic range of the Alexa married to a 65mm sensor and projected on IMAX's dual 4K laser system (which overlaps the two projectors to essentially provide 8K's worth of pixel density, and will naturally be clean, sharp and rock-solid) could look utterly incredible.

Joe and Anthony Russo stated, "The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring 10years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/Arri Digital camera."

Read the joint statement from Marvel and IMAX.

As I suspected, it should be finished and optimized for the new IMAX with Laser 4K and 12.0 surround!

This is gonna be soooo f*************king epic!! I cannot be happier about this and it makes so proud to be a Marvel/MCU fan!

I'm just going to drop these little emoticons here since, no matter how hard I try, I will NEVER be able to find a meme epic enough to express how I react to this news...

I adore IMAX, and I’m amazing and really happy they’ll shoot the entire thing in my favorite format but 3D IMAX? Meh.

And there’s no way these movies won’t be in 3D and 98% of the time every theater that has an IMAX screen will show the IMAX 3D version.

Yup, that's what bugs me about this too. Does your local Imax use those terrible yellow 3D glasses?

So we are talking about a movie framed for 4:3 or 1.85:1? If they shoot for 4:3 in regular theaters, there will be cropping of top and bottom to at least be 1.85:1 most likely.

I'm not super familiar with IMAX, but the screens seem to be at 4:3 to me.

Ultron also wasn't shot in IMAX. Just retrofitted for it. Being shot in IMAX is much different.

I've always thought it was cool how IMAX was shot "sideways" on film. Very cleaver, whoever came up with that idea.

You should've told a manager. XD just uses a standard DCP like any other theater, so if it was indeed presented in 1.85:1 it's a projectionist screw up. Whedon pretty specifically wanted 2.35:1, and I -think- it was mostly shot anamorphically anyway.

Then you've never heard of VistaVision. :-)

It's also a horizontal film format but with 35mm film. Surprise! Horizontal 35mm! Using 8 perforations.

There are some old films filmed in this format and most commonly and famously used for Visual and special effects work in the 1980s and 1990s. George Lucas came up with this idea to use VistaVision for his special effects work for its cleaner footage in the original Star Wars and many other filmmakers followed suit.

We don't know for now if Infinity War will be 1.43 AR.

It could very well be (and most likely) be 1.89
The ARRI Alexa 65 sensor is meant to emulate 5-perf/65mm film, that has an aspect ratio of around 2.2 AR, so that's pretty damn close to 1.89

I'd be a godsend if the IMAX/ARRI 2D camera can shoot at 1.43:1.

IMAX is going full in with 1.43. They designed their laser systems as such, and I'd be surprised if the Arri deal didn't involve the ability for that ratio.

I imagine it will be photographed in 1.43 and projected that way for theaters capable, and cropped to 1.90 for smaller 2K venues and 1.85 for standard theaters. They might take a page from Nolan's book and go 1.43 for real IMAX's, 1.90 for 2K IMAX's, and 2.35:1 for theatrical, but either way, that model they've been using since 2008 will likely remain in tact for this release.

Here's the thing, any camera can shoot in any ratio. It's just a matter of composing and then cropping the footage. If they so please, they could use the Alexa M or Alexa Plus now, shoot without Anamorphic lens and pass it off as "Real IMAX"

I can guarantee, there will not be a 15/70mm print for Infinity War. But whether or not it's composed in 1.43 for the Digital 4K IMAX remains to be seen. Maybe we'll get answers from Civil War.

If it's any IMAX to be released in 2018, it will be all digital. No film. Christopher Nolan had to lobby so hard to convince cinemas to fit the 70mm projector back in specifically for Interstellar. After that, the format is forgotten again. Marvel won't go that far just for 70mm. But I can definitely see IMAX using this as a tool to promote their IMAX with Laser 4K system.

I am more likely to believe it will be 1.89. I might be wrong. Only because we don't know what's the practice with the Alexa 65.

Why 1.89? For a few reasons.

1. The native Alexa 65 sensor ratio is around 2.1-2.2. About the same shape with 5/65mm. It's closer to 1.89 than 1.43. But again, we don't know what's the practice like with filmmakers and this camera.

2. Even in 2018, Digital 2K IMAX will still be around. It's a huge pain in the rear to compose the shots for two different ARs. Not to mention visual effects. Either that, or we may get a ratio in between, like 1.66

3. Other than Nolan's four films and Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, no other Hollywood feature was filmed with 15/65mm film and projected in 1.43. So Civil War and Infinity War can be anything. We'll just wait and see how the Russos and their cinematographer will decide on the chosen AR.

Beyond that, let us all just be excited that our favourite movies is given such a huge privilege to produce in one of the most prestigious and premium formats around. 1.43 or 1.89, it's going to be an epic adventure making our way to an IMAX cinema. It's history in the making! Digital or otherwise, let's treasure the moment!
