Though that's a film I definitely felt could've used some tightening up, and brought down to the 135-140 range Star Wars movies usually reside in.

Anyway, the Russos always said their aim was for the film to be in the two and a half hour range, and that's only 2 minutes longer than Civil War and not dramatically longer than the other Avengers movies. Though hopefully the runtime is accurate and it doesn't go too much longer, as then it's in the Blade Runner 2049 and Age of Extinction territory

Over the last decade of films (2008-2017), WB has released a bunch of big budget movies over two and a half hours: The Dark Knight films, Watchmen, Batman v Superman, Blade Runner 2049, the first two Hobbits, Half Blood Prince.

I believe Last Jedi is literally the only major Disney release to go over that mark in that time.

Half of those movies are DC related. Wonder Woman and Man of Steel are also over 140 minutes.

The only one I've heard about a shorter mandate is Justice League, and I'm guessing it's a reaction due to runtime criticism on MoS and BvS

Marvel might get cold feet on the Black Widow movie if Red Sparrow bombs. To be honest, I don't think a Black Widow movie is really all that necessary and desired.

I do not think their decision making is guided by other studios failings. They do market research and decide the path based on that.

Yea, but Red Sparrow is basically what a Black Widow movie would look like and if the audience don't respond kindly to Red Sparrow, why would they respond much better to a Black Widow movie?
