They can pick and choose what they want to take from the comics and then also create some new storylines that help fit the narrative of the movies.

I honestly never thought Thanos' motives from the comics would translate well into the MCU anyway. I mean, come on. He was trying to destroy the universe just to impress Death and then commits "suicide" at the end for being an idiot by leaving the infinity gauntlet wide open for anyone to take. That's why I always come off as skeptical about Thanos being the best villain in the MCU. Because he is not sympathetic like Doctor Doom, Magneto, Loki and Killmonger are and his motives are weird. But I didn't know the changes they were going to make with Thanos at that time, so sorry if I came off as negative.
