Just a head’s up to anyone else who might have the same issue: I have to set my OLED E6 brightness down two notches below every other HDR10 disc I have when watching Rambo: First Blood Part II to make the letterbox bars vanish entirely. First Blood and Rambo III are unaffected.

Default Rambo uhd

Where is the best place to redeem the digital codes for the 4K versions. I see them on FandangoNow in uhd. And part one on iTunes. Can I redeem the same code in both places since I can’t use movies anywhere?

Of those 2011 SC remasters, the Region B locked RAMBO III from Australia has the proper subtitles (I believe Germany also got this disc). I know it has it because I hunted all around for a copy that had the proper English subs on the Russian dialogue, and that was the only option. This combo pack would have it:

The Canadian Mongrel releases are sourced from the 2011 SC remasters (which we never got in the U.S.) but have lower bit-rates and the wrong subs on III, so I would pass on those (I imported those at one point too!).

Overall I'm torn between the SC remasters and the UHDs. The latter's transfers are nifty, sure, but I much prefer the original stereo/surround mixes (which the SC remasters all have).

God damn. First Blood was amazing on UHD.

The small gravel when he's walking the roads. The whole stealth trap scenes in the woods, with the lightning flashes. The cave sequences with the torch. The explosions when he gets back to town.

Incredibly vivid. Really eye popping and still natural.

The UHDs are region free, but the Blu-rays are locked.

In any event, I asked about the 820 compared to my 900 for use with my JVC projector. The answer I wanted was that my 900 was equivalent. The actual answer is that the 820 has tone mapping which might improve upon the custom tone mapping that my calibration tech used. I'll simply live in denial. Forever!
You can't fathom why people don't want to spend $500-1000 on a player when they can get one from another solid brand name for $150? lmao

Watched it last night and have to agree on all counts, the cave sequences especially.

Frustratingly though, the subtitles are presented in a forced subtitle stream rather than in "burnt-in" form as originally released.

Thanks for the info! The original stereo mixes (or at least something resembling them) are definitely a selling point for me.

Are you sure that Australian release has the uncut Rambo III, though? I was looking at DVDCompare, and it said it was the cut version.

Nah, it's a clone of the UK disc, so it's the BBFC-cut version. Not by much but still enough to be annoying.

I prefer the original burnt-in subs.

Are there any UHDs currently where only a certain release has them?

Unfortunately, I think DMRI2006 is mistaken (since confirmed by him that the site I read it on is wrong), I have read on another forum the 2011 Remasters do not feature the original Dolby Surround mixes, the 2.0 on these are mix-downs of the shoddy 5.1 exhibiting the same flaws.

The only way to get the original theatrical mixes is either the laserdisc or original dvd releases and sync / remux them yourself to the new 4k masters.

I’m UK based, how bad is the horse fall cut on Rambo III? I don’t like cut films, but in the same way, I don’t necessarily mind removing a 2 second moment of a horse getting tripped up, as long as it’s not too jarring.

I know I can import the US UHD sets, but I’d quite like region B versions of the Blu-rays, rather than region A locked discs. Thoughts?

That's 100% wrong.

They are not mixdowns, they have full directional activity and surround information, which the 5.1 tracks on those very same 2011 Studio Canal discs completely lack.

Whatever forum you read is mistaken -- but we've had this discussion here, on this board, many times before. And there are many other places that verify it, so I'm not sure where you are looking, but that claim is absolutely false.
