After months of rumor and speculation, Variety confirms that 20th Century Fox plans to keep the "Aliens" franchise a live with a prequel film that will be directed by original helmer Ridley Scott. The announcement that Fox has hired a writer comes just two months after the 30th Anniversary of Scott's original sci-fi horror film which launched a series of movie sequels, a number of comic books, and two movies that pit the Aliens against Fox's other creature franchise, the Predator. Screenwriter Jon Spaihts has been hired to write the prequel after the studio was impressed by his work on two space thrillers, both for Keanu Reeves, called Passengers and Shadow 19.

This is great news. I thought I read that he had no interest in directing Alien again? I wonder what they did to convince him.

Maybe with Ridley directing a new Alien and Rodriguez doing Predators the franchises will become good again.

They probably showed him Alien vs. Predator 2 the movie, and decided to do an alien movie again.

Well how did the first movie start? With the "Company" sending a ship to that planet with the colony right? I would imagine a prequel would be about how that colony survived until the Marines got there.

I could be wrong since it's been many years, but that sounds like Aliens not Alien.

Dark Horse Comics did a mini-series about this, called Newt's Tale. As I recall (it's been... a while) it was pretty dang good.
