Paramount needs to market it as both a nostalgic throwback and also as Mission Impossible with Jets. Could have a massive hit on their hands if they play their cards right

must say though for me it will take some time getting used to the "video" kind of look. For whatever reason this reels like a movie that should be on grainy film. But whatever, bet it looks better in the theater

Default Wrong director?

A perfect trailer. My only worry is the director, Kosinski - Oblivion was weak. God knows why Cruise brought him back to helm the long awaited follow-up to the film that launched Cruise into megastardom. This needed a sure hand.

The visuals are there, the music’s great, Cruise is on form, and he’s got a strong supporting cast, but if Kosinski can’t handle the basic drama then this could be a gorgeous but forgettable creampuff.

Sure, the original was cheesy but the central relationships were actually well acted and those dynamics - Mav, Goose Ice Man, and to some extent Kelly McGillis - are what really kept the film alive in our hearts for decades.

Watch Only the Brave and get back to us.... Kosinski is a talent on the rise and maybe Oblivion was flawed, but Tron Legacy was boss.

Not nearly as salacious, but ICYMI I posted this sneak peak pic last October in the HDR Discussion thread –

b.t.w., to those with eagle eyes, yes, that’s a single seat F/A-18E with Mav’s markings in front on the right as seen in the trailer

Penton, on the subject of Top Gun, tomorrow is Saturday July 20th.
It is Comic-Con in San Diego. And tomorrow Kevin Feige (Marvel's top gun) might make a big "Top Gun" announcement ...

1. What could be that big announcement?
2. What happened fifty years ago tomorrow?

The Digital Bits has this being released this year. I expect it will be released at some point soon to coincide with the sequel.

I knew this was coming but aside from “yeah, ok, Top Gun sequel” I wasn’t that excited, but man, I haven’t gotten goosebumps from a trailer in a LONG time. I can’t wait to see this, the visuals from the trailer alone are pretty spectacular. Now I want to watch the first, and was disappointed to see there’s no 4K disc yet.

No, but really, out of all the digital cameras being used, the Venice, for whatever reason that I'm struggling to articulate, seems to stand out from both Arri and RED.

I can easily see why Cameron also chose it for the new Avatar films based on the footage from the Maverick trailer alone.

Looks to be razor sharp, have an immense sense of depth, and some amazing color accuracy. I can't even begin to imagine how the HDR grade for this is going to look.
Venice continues to evolve - https://www.cinema5d.com/sony-venice...odes-6k-90fps/

as do tools for Dolby Vision - https://www.shootonline.com/spw/mti-...-hdr-packaging

I remember only liking this movie for Tom Cruise’s smile when I was younger, but now it’s chock full of Botox, so maybe I’ll just Redbox this.

Did you actually watch the trailer? This is the first movie I’ve seen him in where he looks significantly aged.

I thought he did quite a bit in the mummy. Here he did in some shots, not others. When I say he looks chock full of Botox, i don’t mean he looks young.

No problemo, I'll tell you next week.
_____

By the way, 'Top Gun' was the film that got me started in surround sound immersion*...with more than three speakers...(5) plus subwoofer.
...Dolby Pro Logic. I bought the very first DPL receiver...from Pioneer.

* I started in 1970 with center back mono surround.
Pink Floyd was the band that got me into it. ...A beautiful immersive journey, sound & moving visuals.

** I expect 'Top Gun: Maverick' to be a full blast immersion wise, for all senses.
Anything less is ... unfathomable.
