The Hobbit films have been greenlit and Peter Jackson is set to direct. Both movies will be shot back-to-back (just like the trilogy) beginning February 2011, so hopefully we'll get the extended edition blu-ray when the first movie released in theaters Christmas 2012.

Ugh I don't wanna wait THAT long...

But if it means they do a really superb job (equivalent to their DVD releases, which I've never seen topped) then I guess it's ok ;P

You think they're just sitting on it, taunting us with not releasing it? Warner just released the theatrical cuts, and they're probably focusing on many other releases.

I wouldn't be opposed to owning the original theatrical cuts if they were at USD 29 or below during the Black Friday sales.

I've waited long enough and since there's no news on the EEs, I'll bite come Black Friday.

With the delay of the Hobbit movie, you'll be waiting a while before the EE are released.
The AQ alone is awesome enough to get the theatrical verisons to hold you over for the next couple of years.

The relatively quick price reductions on the TE blu-rays suggest to me that sales haven't gone quite as they might have expected...

Slightly off topic but, from the statements I read, it seems WB are trying to piggy-back on PJ & the LOTR success. Hey, WB - you had nothing to with the LOTR! I sincerely doubt there is one executive in that studio would have the b***s to green-light $300 mill for this project. In the meantime, try not to destroy the last HP movie like you wrecked the previous 2 installments.

End rand...

I would not have bought if I didn't get the set for $25 due to a pricing error.

I'm no spreader of DNR paranoia but I really have a hard time watching FotR on Blu-ray. Maybe it's the nature of the way it was filmed and not really DNR but whatever it is I find it unenjoyable (is that a word?). Maybe the EE will look better some day when it comes out.

No this was a pricing screwup by Future Shop in Canada during the initial release week. I have them in hand. Reading back now it was actually $18.99 + taxes and shipping. The mistake has long ago been fixed but here is the link...

Sure the last 2 movies are not near as bad so it's $18.99 for the two of them. That's not a bad price I could always likely sell them for more than 18.99 once I watch them all.

I watched it this weekend. FOTR looks fine, a lot better than the kvetching would have folks making you believe the worst.

I don't remember seeing as much detail in the theatrical showings, but there's a *lot* I have seen for the first time watching this new BD.

The other 2 films look even better.

I don't think that looks so terrible. I've seen a lot worse on BD.

Everyone has their own opinions - that's for sure. I guess maybe I'm just used to more detail on my Blu-rays. I've seen close to 1000 films on Blu-ray now and FotR is down there for me in the not so great PQ dept. I sit about 7-8 feet away from my 58" screen to watch Blu-rays and really can't sit that close with this one. If I move back a few feet it doesn't bother me as much so that is what I did the last time I was watching this.

Maybe it's just the source material and transfer they had to work with. I'm hoping they'll have a new transfer though with the EE versions.

I’m curious why people are thinking they are gonna remaster the EE”s when they are released??

Who’s to say the don’t do seemless branching or whatever it’s called and keep the original copy from the theatrical releases??

Yikes, that looks pretty bad.

I don't remember it looking like that on my TV though.

What the hell. It doesn't even look like this when you watch it on 50 inch TV screen

This is tampered with. The Blu rays looks really good. The best LOTR has ever looked. If anyone hasn't bought this yet. Do it and judge for yourself and you will see the tranfers for LOTR trilogy is actually quite good
