Entire Trilogy next year, in Theatrical, not Extended

Quote:
"Finally, our industry sources have hinted to us that when Warner delivers The Lord of the Rings films on Blu-ray Disc, some time late next year, they will very likely be the original theatrical versions. But don't freak out and run off to start a petition or something. There's good reason for it: Word is that director Peter Jackson wants to save the Extended Editions for an elaborate and ultimate Blu-ray box set release closer to the debut of the new Hobbit films in theatres. This way, as was the case with the previous DVD releases, you'll eventually get both versions and the best will be saved for last."

I'm more than happy to wait, if it means getting an ULTIMATE edition. I have a feeling there will be plent to watch until then.

WHY? It doesn't even matter if it's DTS, TruHD, Or uncompressed. If you really like DTS better than dolby, than you'd want uncompressed, but they're all supposed to be equal, so it doesn't matter. Given New line's preferences, they'd choose DTS(unless warner makes that decision, now).

As much as I love the LOTR, I'll be waiting until the Extended Editions come out. I did it for DVD and I'll do it again for Blu-Ray.

That's my plan. I wonder if the "Ultimate Collection" will contain all of the extras from the EE DVDs. I'm kind of reluctant to give those up. The packaging is soooooo pretty.

Agreed. Theatrical release on blu-ray is the same as not releasing it at all. I own over 100 blu-rays so I have no problem buying discs but I refuse to pay a premium price for standard version with less content than the DVDs.

This is one I dont mind double dipping on. This is easily my favorite trilogy and the films are so different Theatrical vs Extended that I dont mind the double dip. I just really hope those extended versions will be on one disc for each movie, no more switching

Not really. When FOTR was first ANNOUNCED for DVD, PJ and New Line stated that there will be an extended cut of the film with lots more extras on a 4-disc set. So people can choose to buy the regular DVD or wait for the EE. The point was, they told people that there will be two different releases.

So it is only logical that PJ tell fans of LOTR this. There will be the theatrical release and the EE on BD; the EE will just get released later. You only get "milked" if you're not told of the plans in advance.

Don't get rid of the DVDs. According to BHunt in his old postings, there are STILL so much behind the footage stuff that PJ has yet to release. So the BD version will not contain previous supplementary content.

And I'll be getting the theatrical and the EE on the BD, just like I did with the DVD.

You never know Warner could be a major pain in the ass (and there is nothing new there)not releasing the EE on Blu.
Because maybe the theatrical on Blu will not sell so good because everybody is waiting on the EE. But it will never come because the sales will be bad for the theatrical

Though that maybe an interesting enough theory, I hardly find that would be the case.

For me, the extended cuts represents Jackson's magnificent vision of Middle Earth as one long whole story (which I recently indulged in during a sick day).

The Theatrical Cuts, however, will always (for me) represent the power and emotion I felt upon seeing these films for the first time (esp. FotR). These are purchases that I will not regret in the slightest.

Don't you think the extended editions will likely have the theatrical as well via seemless branching though? If they do, then you can just wait and have both.

As far as I learnt from reviews on Escape From New York, the quality of the Blu-ray transfer was no better than the last DVD release. There was certainly an overload of edge enhancement and haloing when I watched it. I could be wrong about the SD transfer but all the Optimum Blu-ray releases got some very disappointing reviews regarding the transfers. I'm going by a reviewer on Amazon though and I certainly agreed EFNY didn't look true-Blu to me when compared to the others in my collection

Just found a thread about the EFNY release on a UK forum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...1054313&page=3

i found the extended version took the menace out of the Urukai by making them "too human" ('cant hold his grog" scene)

bit like the extended cut of Apocalypse Now gave too much information on Col kurtz through the inclusion of dialogue scenes. He was a much more darker character in the original

The thing Peter Jackson kept saying when the DVDs were coming out was that he didn't want to repeat anything, so as to not make it like fans were buying the same thing over. Thus, the big releases had the extended cut only, and brand new extras (with no carry overs like trailers, tv specials, etc.).

There's no reason to not expect the same with the Blu-rays.
