For those that don't follow the insider's thread, here is what Jeff Kleist from The Digital Bits had to say when asked why they aren't releasing LOTR with seamless branching to have both cuts of the films on there:

"Because PJ didn't want them to. He's got a new uber edition with piles of new extras and maybe some huge suprises on the way (sorry, not sharing, worth the wait if they happen, promise) that need more time".

Very intriguing!!! Wonder what the huge surprises could be and all the new extras??!!

What wouldn't make sense is for someone to try to rate the picture and sound quality of a product they haven't seen, as that can only be determined with the product in hand.
I don't go to Amazon for movie reviews, I might as well pick names out of the phone book. Reviews of the actual item are useful to me, which is why I consider 90 percent of Amazon reviews to be crap.

I'm planning on buying the theatrical versions. And I will buy the extended versions. See, I'm a fanboy and double dipping is what we do. What I find hilarious is that 95% of the fanboys on this board who have thrown down and said "No way am I double dipping" will cave in once the reviews start pouring in. And the other 5% will lie about caving in. They'll keep checking this thread every time someone posts and may even throw in the occasional curse at WB for the inhumanity of capitalism, but eventually the pressure will be too great. Oh, they may fight it kicking and screaming, but they'll surrender finally. Check the thread after these have been released. The loudest protesters will either be nowhere in sight or will come back with tail between legs lamenting their own weak wills. Either way, it's because they bought them. But go on and keep up the bravado. It'll be our little secret.

LOL. I'm sure you are totally right. I loved the books and although I really enjoyed the movies as well, they are nothing like the books IMO. I'm not gonna lie, I have the theatrical versions and extended versions of the DVD's sitting on my shelf right now. But also when I bought the regular versions I knew nothing about any extended versions that were going to be released. This Blu-Ray release of LOTR is regular priced at $100 and is currently $65. There is noway I can buy this set for $65 and then in a year or so spend another $65+ for the extended versions, not whenever I have the DVD's sitting right there looking at me. But like you said, alot of people will double dip, but I can find other movies that I'd be happy to buy for that price that I won't have to upgrade in a year or so... at least not that I already know about.

No offense taken. I'll save you a place in line on release day, fanboy!

Well I got a reply from Target and it's actually a little confusing:

"Thanks for asking about the The Lord of the Rings: Motion Picture Trilogy (Extended) edition. Unfortunately, we aren't able to tell you whether this Blu-ray disc is available in theatrical edition on blu-ray. I know that it can be difficult to figure out what you want to order without more information, and I'm sorry if we've let you down. To know more about the theatrical edition on blu-ray, please give us a call at 800 591-3869. We'll do whatever we can to help. It's disappointing that we didn't have better information about this product on the product description page, and I'll make sure to share your concerns with our team that works with our product information."

They don't know if the theatrical edition will be available on blu-ray? How is it possible for consumers to know more about a product than the stores that will be selling it? And I didn't even ask if the theatrical edition would be available, I told them I knew it would and asked whether they would actually be selling the extended edition, a question which wasn't really answered. Well, whatever. I'm not gonna worry about this anymore seeing as how I already planned on just getting the theatricals anyway.

Amazing how the simpliest of questions can be answered in such a complicated way that doesn't even answer the question that was originally asked. All this does is make one ask more questions.. like.. why isn't reading comprehension a "must" for jobs when reading is neccessary? It figures though.. if they actually answered your question then you may not buy it from them. idk, the world is a crazy place.

Stores rarely know anything like that, people working there just know how to sell or send out the products.
Same problem with Amazon, they should have more and also more accurate information.
And a better production-information-contact.
But that wouldn't be needed if the information would simply be on the product-page to start with.

love the movies but not enought to be a fanboy. i double dipped with the DVD's and realized that i would've been perfectly fin without the extened cuts. so i'm personally happy with the 1st release being the theatrical because i have 0 intension on buying the extended at all. the only way i cave is if they improve the PQ/AQ drastically from whatever they do with these ones being released

Maybe the altered Gollum in FOTR? He talked about that in the commentary. PJ also talked about bloopers, but I'm sure that won't be the big selling point .

The image of Gollum in FOTR is not the same design as in the other two movies. The final version is based off Andy Segals face. he said that one day he would fix that. So it seems logical it would be for the Blus.

I am sure many people will cave in and buy the TE. You can include me in the category that won't however. I never even got the TE in DVD format. I am only interested in the EE

I am getting both. I will enjoy the TEs until the EEs come out. It's not like we're talking big sums of money here. And it's also over a period of many months. At least PJ isn't putting walky-talkies in the place of swords.

I wold love it if it featured improved CG and even more additional scenes (hey the moves are already insanely long, won't hurt to make them even longer imo)

Why not just rent the TE's and then buy the EE's when they come out?

I watch the trilogy about every year and a half, so no way am I buying it twice when I'll probably only watch them once or twice.

I preordered today. I had a $30 Amazon GC from Xmas and $60+ worth of Amazon credit for coins using Coinstar. Even if I do DP, which I doubt I will, I will not feel guilty.
