Not really. The people who post here know, but the people who post on forums like this are not in any way representative of the public at large. Most "regular folks" will purchase the TE's without any knowledge that a bigger, better set is coming down the line. You think most of those folks would be buying this one if they knew WB was already planning a superior release?

The extended versions are for the rabid fan base while the theatricals are for the general public who, even if they knew about the extendeds, probably wouldn't buy them. |

![]() It's also not just a matter of theatrical vs. extended - the EE's will supposedly have a lot of bonus stuff over the TE's. Again, if most people knew about this, we both know it would affect sales of the TE's. |

Yeah, I think that's what most people here forget,
that most people are more of the "regular consumers" that don't keep track of these things. Most are fine with the Theatrical version whether or not there is a different version, or even if they KNEW there would be a more extensive release later on. The default release is the default release, there's nothing wrong with it. The thing is that there's just more tó the Extended version, which only the biggest film/LOTR-fans might care about. Personally, I'm not a regular consumer, but not a huge fan or anything like that either. I just usually like the most thorough release for the bigger titles, so that's why I'll wait. Plus that I didn't see the Extended ones yet and have the Theatricals on DVD still. So definitely interested in the more extensive set on BD. ![]() |

Now, there is so much discussion anywhere that the LOTR Blu-rays are even mentioned, that anyone who cares about the EE versions probably knows they are coming out later. Those who still don't know, still don't care and will happily buy the theatricals in April and be perfectly satisfied. |

An announcement means exactly squat to the average consumer.

Neither do the EEs.
Can we please give this tired debate of the TE vs EE a rest. I think EVERYONE understands that there are people that don't like or feel ripped off by the fact that the TEs are coming out first. To summarize: 1. Most people don't know or care about the EEs and are fine buying the TEs 2. There are some people that will buy the TEs knowing the EEs will happen at some point down the line (double dipping) 3. There are some people that will "boycott" the TEs in favor of the EEs and obviously have more patience than those in points 1 and 2. Now getting back to the TEs has anyone seen the Best Buy Steelbook yet? Any pics? (and no the international seperate SBs don't count) |

Although I will buy the steelbook anyway, I would be curious to know how it accommodates the special feature discs? The only steelbooks I have now are the James Bond BD's, and they only house one disc.

Is Best Buy offering anything other than the steelbooks? I'm not a steelbook fan so I would rather have a more standard looking packaging. Should I start hunting somewhere else for day 1 purchase? |

Isn't that the same trailer that came out a few months ago?
I wish they had footage from the actual master they're using for the blu-ray. I'm assuming that isn't it since it looks pretty awful even for an internet trailer. |

It will be a 'jumbo' steelbook like Up and Monsters Inc were (google search Jumbo steelbook if you so wish). Those releases held 4 discs, but jumbos can hold up to 6. Therefore all the films and special features discs will fit. The digital copies wont, but apparently will be included outside the packaging... or, well, in the case of the US, Best Buy are releasing just the case as part of a pre order, and then you can fill it up with the discs on release date. In that case, I guess people will just have to live with having the digital copies separate (no problem for me, they're pretty much redundant once used once anyway). Lots of people don't like jumbos because they look out of place on the shelf next to normal ones, are generally more plasticy, and the disc holders have had a tendency to break on some occasions. I for one don't mind them, particularly for something like LOTR when it's for a collection of films so it's kind of ok that it's in a bigger case. Quote:
Futureshop in Canada will also be having a steelbook. There has been questions as to whether the US version will be a 'stickerbook' (cover art being a sticker on a steel case), as opposed to the Canadaian one which should be a 'proper' steelbook, but nobody has seen any yet so still no word. Also no word on whether it will be DVD-height (like the Hurt Locker), or not - I hope not! The cases are due to be available in Best Buy from 7/3, apparently, so we'll know then. Also, internationally (Germany and France at least) individual steelbooks have been made available for each film, but not in English language versions.
