For me, a blu-ray release > dvd any day of the week. No matter what, it will look a lot better than any current SD DVD out right now, so I wouldn't worry too much.

It makes plenty of sense: it's cheaper. The second two films were mastered digitally at 2K, probably state of the art for that time. There's little work involved with getting them to look good, they just have to get the digital master and feed it into an encoder.
The first one would involve significantly more work and expenses to bring it to modern standards, since they'd have to scan the camera negatives and first-generation VFX prints at 4k or whatever, and create an all-new digital master. It could look great if they went to all that trouble (look at Fight Club.. also shot on super35 with a lot of digital effects work), but I don't think they did.

Keep in mind once they get them they still have to swift through two 3 hour movies and a 3.5 hour movie plus all of the extras of each.

Edit: More shots from the encode from a different member of AVS:

The DVDs aren't the greatest quality... So perhaps the BD won't be either.

That doesn't really make sense, just because the SD versions of the films suck doesn't mean the blu-rays will as well.

Apologetic newb question here:
Is this the extended edition trilogy with the documentaries? Or just the theatrical trilogy?

Not sure if this has been reported here yet, DVDworldusa showing this as in stock and shipping, but 3 Blu Ray, and 6 DVDs

Looks like all the extra features are on DVD discs, just the movie discs on Blu

Those shots from TT and ROTK look pretty good. Nice and grainy with good detail. It's just so hard to tell from a still shot what it will actually look like in motion.

Yup, I think there are actually people refusing to buy it now because of screencaps, there are no words.

They are also compressed, so the blu-ray should look even better than the shots

I really hope my favorite movie (RotK) gets at least a 4.5/5 treatment

Is that how he captured them?

Didn't know that, thought the first guy was the one that used PNG, my mistake.

oh, you mean the bootleg guy's captures. yeah, those are from a recompressed source. There's an AVS thread with PNG caps from the disc.
