I have no problem of how they treat it, and I have not seen the Lord of the rings movies in years, and I though of rewatching them on blu ray would reframe my opinion. I'm just thinking of how well they already did with classic films on Blu ray (especially The Seventh Seal), and how they tempered with fans by ignoring people who have more dedication (some more ignorant may call obsession) to their theater, so allow the people to make it easier to ingest on smaller televsion sets, and make those of us who spent much money and time on their theaters to choke on. I can't do anything about it though.

P.S. they really need to bring Lawrence of Arabia to blu ray.

(Edit: That doesn't mean I won't watch the Lord of The Rings on Blu ray, rent them at least. I want to see how well the cinematography is given in high definition.)

I agree if that screenshot was how it looked it should have only gotten 1 star. It almost smells like a conspiracy here.
I am glad that someone has the discs is saying it does not look that bad

The way I see it, LOTR/film fans will very soon forget about the quality when they start watching, whereas Blu-ray fans will not even bother buying it.
Just to clarify, I'll never forget the faults are there. I'll always wish the transfer was better. However, I actively try to work through my disappointment so I can enjoy a film I truly love.

Measured criticism has its place though, and hopefully inspires studios to strive for the utmost quality.

Im guessing thats where the problem lies. Most people have looked at the screenshot on their laptop/PC, and have passed judgment. It looked completely different when I viewed it on my TV.

I agree... I also see a relatively quick drop on this for this reason.

Wow now i am relieved. That is so good to hear. Then why do they post a picture that does not show how it really looks. When infact it looks WAY better then this

I want to thank Kenneth Brown for giving an honest review, as I consider myself duly informed now.
All I have to do now is to have arguments with myself, which one to listen to, the DNR hater or the LOTR fan

How about Ken, a reviewer from this site? He obviously has the discs
and FOTR is that bad. The other two are much better but still have
problems.

Did you read his review?

Again, the caps are what is on the disc.

There is no conspiracy. It looks "different" on your display because of your display, not because of the caps.

How it appears on your TV will be different how it appears on my TV, it will be different to how it appears on his TV, their TV's, etc. Displays differ.

I'm looking forward with this being the parroted theme for the next 10 pages.

How it looks in the caps is how it is on the disc, period.

How it looks on your TV is only how it looks on your TV.

The shot in the film doesn't look better than the screenshot. It's a direct screengrab from the disc. Different TVs can artificially enhance a poor transfer. Once various sharpening options, contrast boosting, etc are switched off, this is how the image looks on the disc. This is the exact same methodology and equipment we use for all our screenshots. The pics for 'Toy Story' and 'Toy Story 2' (not to mention every high-scoring release) look amazing for the same reason -- our shots are captured directly from the disc.

My apologies for any confusion

Screenshots have always been useful for me in, I know what to expect from a Blu-ray disc. When I'm interested in buying a movie I can come here, look at the screenshot and get a fairly accurate idea of how the movie will look. Here are two examples:

Twister (Extremely soft through out. Fine detail is almost none existent)
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...=88&position=8

Man On Fire (Strongly detailed and sharp)
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...14&position=11

Now when I bought these movies and viewed them, I pretty much got what showed up on the screenshots. Twister never revealed fine detail and sadly it never became sharper. Man On Fire had a great amount of detail, just like the screenshots showed. I'm greatful for the screenshots because they do help you understand the image quality of the movie. I also can notice the lack of detail on Blu-ray discs on smaller screens. At times I'll watch a Blu-ray movie on a 21.5 1080p monitor and it's easy to see the difference between a movie like Twister and Man On Fire.

Thankfully, I never cared about the Lord Of The Rings Movie so it doesn't affect me, but it has brought forward a very interesting discussion.

I know....... I can't wait

And in regards to the "It doesn't look that way on my T.V." comments. I would highly recommend a professional calibration for your set as it will greatly enhance the viewing experience of the Blu-rays out there that in fact do have reference quality video transfers.

In my mind nothing can top "Princess and the Frog". THat blew me away.

You know what movie blew me away was Texas Chainsaw Massacre (new one)

If you were watching the 3d version you wouldn't have been celebrating, you probably would have been puking into a bucket instead.

In both instances, I was referring to the screencap. I said a few posts earlier that there was a slight difference between the disc paused and the jpeg, almost negligible. What Im getting at is, it looked very poor on my laptop, how many other people have viewed it in a similar way and passed judgment? Probably the vast majority.

So glad you say the screenshot everwhere does not look anything like they do when you watch it on a 46". And that they are much better

Can't wait to hear your verdict on how it looks on the 84" screen. Please let us know

The first film always looked inferior to the others, both theatrically and on DVD. Blu-ray just makes that more apparent. I'm still going to buy it, and I'll double dip when the extended versions are released.
