A couple of reasons to at least be somewhat optimistic about the future Blu-ray release of the extended versions:

To my knowledge, the EEs have not been shown on television, so there won't be an existing HDTV master for Warner to fall back on. Also, the reason they are being delayed, according to Jackson, is so that he has time to work on the uber-box set of the extended version, which tells me that Wingnut Films will have a lot more input than they did for the theatrical versions, which were all WB as far as I could tell.

RAH (Robert Harris) seemed to indicate it was New Line and not WB that did the mastering and transfer of LOTR. I find that interesting.

See Penton-man's thread for details

I only saw the second and third in a movie theater, and I frankly can't remember what they looked like because I was immersed in the movie itself.
I'm just saying that there could be other reasons why the movies look the way they do, instead of simply blaming Warner Bros., especially since PJ approved them.

Although possible, I'm having a hard time believing that. He was in the middle of a lot of tasks when these transfers were done last year. I was wondering what the chain of approval at WB is for this transfer. Who would give the stamp of approval before Jackson would have seen it? Is it just one guy? Several? A department? Surely someone watched the finished product?

WB has extensive QC in many stages, just like any other major studio.

You are not listening. Due to the way the post-production for Fellowship of the Ring was handled, the DNR is permanent and probably not removable. As such, no matter how many times they re-mastered, the DNR and softness will still be there. Don't forget, these films made for less than mediocre DVDs before, stands to reason the blu-rays might not be reference either.

If so, the Fellowship EE's will also be lackluster.

Everyone keeps saying this, but it isn't true.

Many of the DNR issues are not in the HDTV broadcast. It hasn't been "removed" from the HDTV version, the HDTV version hasn't been artificially altered so that it magically doesn't appear - it just simply isn't in there. There is a night and day difference in certain scenes. Look at the one with Bilbo's face, it is abundantly clear the the BD presentation is heavily DNR'ed where the HDTV simply is not.

What some of you guys are missing is this....

Fellowship of the Ring like any movie shot on film SHOULD have a film grain pattern to it. It has nothing to do with how much DNR was used while making the movie itself. If something is transferred from film, it should retain a film grain pattern structure. The fact that a lot of film grain structure is missing from the Blu-ray demonstrates they used too much DNR for the BD transfer/master.

I know this sounds dumb but is there a good way to open those cases with 5-6 disc in them? I hate those kind because I have had a bad experience with them(blade runner). When I open them it seems sometimes the disc fall out of the holder( even though the holder holds the disc firmly).

One of the swords has the inscription on it, "Cut out DNR".
