So, does anyone know if Best Buy matches there online price for those who pre-ordered it at a higher price? I pre-ordered weeks ago but the price was higher and it has not been adjusted when I check my order status. Best Buy hasn't answered my email yet.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive response to the new Blu-ray set, I decided to do additional research on the product. And I have decided that I will probably be making the purchase.

Like you said, as with Baraka, as with other movies they have proven that they really don't know what they are doing (aside from hunting down trying to find the worst grabs of movies possible). A broken clock is correct twice a day

Watched FotR now. Panasonic PT-AE4000E projector (@ D65, Rec 709, Gamma 2.2), OPPO BD-80 Blu-ray player, 2 meter wide screen, seating distance 3.6 meters.

PQ is inconsistant, imo hovering between 2.0/5.0 and 4.0/5.0 from scene to scene. In motion, it's better than the screenshots suggest. Also no MPEG broadcast noise, some seem to love so much.

If i get my nose to the screen, yes then it really doesn't look good. I really enjoyed watching the TE of FotR and i don't miss the EE (which i have on PAL DVD and watched like 15 times).

The audio is great btw, just in case someone cares. Moving on to TTT now.....

I can't believe how many people want the extended edition. It bogs the whole experience down with scenes that add little to nothing to the overall story.

Personally, I hope people really enjoy the set. I have my complaints, but the moment my review was finished and my job was done, I found myself enjoying three of my favorite films in semi-gorgeous high definition

Agreed. It will be interesting reading come next week and there will definitely be two sides as you say. Should be entertaining if nothing else.

Indeed, this thread is the single greatest unofficial Blu-ray "extra" of all time!

40" is about as small as you can get in today's HD environment, so for sizes in that range you will have to sit very close not only to notice flaws but to appreciate the resolution and quality of great presentations.

For anyone will larger TV's, or especially people with PJ setups, at what you would consider normal seating distance these types of things are just blatant.

And not everyone is happy with it. There have been several poor reviews and poor impressions. The people that are happy with it tend to be people with very small TV's, which is fine. That's the upside to a smaller display when you sit several feet from them, bad discs become less "bad" (but on the flip side good ones don't appear nearly as good as they could be.)

DNR is a problem with this release, sorry. Looking at Fellowship screens makes that very, very clear.

If you don't want to trust AVS for whatever reason, read this site's official review, or highdefdigest, or DVDBeaver (whenever they get around to posting it.)
Agreed.

[QUOTE=Stinky-Dinkins;3102344]The people who posted those screens, Xylon and Eric.exe, have always used the same frame types when comparing and will give you the frame info when asked, they never compare I to B.

Baraka is a Tier 0 title on that forum. Baraka looks stunning.

This kind of thing is just a poorly disguised diversion of the topic at hand, this release. I am referring to this title in particular.

Fellowship has serious video quality flaws, it just isn't a good looking release. Those flaws exist regardless of what forum they happened to be first discussed on.

Yeah, at 40 inches you'd have to sit damn close to pick up on the major visual flaws, not much more than 4 feet.

Agreed again.

I think I'll skip this release.

I'll save for the EE but then wait for reviews in hopes they fix things up. This is a title I want to have 5 star video quality,... I hope they fix it up.

I'll be getting mine tomorrow from WBshop.com and
I'm expecting the worst because DNR bothers me.

I sit about 8' away from my 60" Kuro and normally
I can pick up DNR from that distance so I'm expecting
the same with FOTR.

The main reason I'm getting this set is the audio
upgrade but I'd be lying if I said the video part was
not important.

I don't have the requisite 5 hours to explain in fine detail how you're wrong - I'll simply illustrate one tiny example. In the theatrical edition of The Two Towers, Frodo meets Gollum and suddenly whips out Gollum's real name...Smeagol. If you haven't seen the Extended Edition of FOTR, you have no idea how Frodo suddenly became an expert in Gollum's previous backstory. It comes out of nowhere, and it is jarring. This is all explained by watching the Extended Edition of Fellowship.

They add nothing?

The extended editions have their flaws (by showing exactly where Denethor's pyre is located, it makes his silly leap off the citadel of Gondor even more implausible...it has since become known as Denethor's "Flaming Mile"...see also Denethor sending Boromir on a mission to steal the ring for Gondor -- another alteration to the detriment of the story, as that lets Boromir off the hook for his sins) but these transgressions are more than compensated for by - thank God - adding more to the journey across Mordor by Sam and Frodo, who tend to disappear in the theatrical cut of Return of the King, and the trek from Cirith Ungol shown in a few simple shots.

I could go on for hours listing all the reasons why "the true cuts" (as Viggo Mortensen put it) all improve upon their Contractually Obligated versions, but you don't have time to read it, and I don't have time to write it.

I guess I'll be able to be a pretty good judge. 42" tv sitting around 3.5-4.5 ft away. lol...AQ is my main reason for upgrading. I love the movies because regardless of PQ I get drawn into the story and don't notice to much, but good AQ always enhances the drawn in experience

And don't the theatrical editions leave out quite a bit of the backstory of Faramir's relationship with Boromir & their father? That's one of my favorite sub-plots of the movies.

I understand that a lot of people like them and you're both entitled to your opinion but I would ask this: Is there anything in the extended that is necessarry to tell the story?

It will be funny if in november 2012 the EEs come out & look exactly the same as the TEs so some will have waited 2.5 years for nothing....basically....classic.

Wouldnt that be a kicker.

Well I got the set today, I have to say I looks fine. It's not a great transfer but it's not as bad as people said it was. What I find interesting is that I paused it a the same point as eric.exe screencap (frodo in the woods at the start of the movie) and I would have to say its not as bad as he made it to be.

Sure, IF the ONLY reason you were not buying these was because of the PQ. Many of us who are waiting have more reasons to wait than just the PQ issues. I was never going to purchase this set in the first place no matter what the PQ/AQ scored since I want and am waiting for the EEs.
