This rumor of years that you're talking about.
Why? Why would you think they'd wait years? I would expect an extended release within about a year of the first release. Not 3 years later. |

I was under the impression that the EE weren't going to come out until the hobbit release. Something about a huge marketing blitz of the new movie and the long awaited EE on Blu. Who knows? So many rumors out there it's hard to REALLY know what is going on or an accurate timeframe!

Ok, EE freaks. Name one thing in the extended editions that actually helps the story? It's been a while, so i'm sure someone will mention something i actually liked about the EE's, but i also remember them sucking some of the life out.
FOTR: Seeing Isildur put the ring on at the beginning to escape the road agents is cool, but doesn't it take away the wow factor when Bilbo puts it on for the first time at the b-day party? Tom Bombadil? I dunno, they ramp up the tension by fleeing the shire with the 7 following, only to spend 15 minutes at his house drinking tea. More battle footage? I'm not sure about that either. I mean, I'm pretty battled out by the end of the trilogy. The books are great and full of all those little details and side stories, but there's no way that every little thing can be translated to a film without it becoming a mess. I've mentioned it in another thread, but the only thing that disappointed me in the movies is the way they handle the scene near the end of ROTK. The one where the Lieutenant comes out at the black gate and taunts/bluffs the remaining members of the fellowship with news of Frodo's death. In the book we have no idea if he's bluffing, but the way they filmed it we're already aware that Frodo is in bad shape, but the ring is "safe." Big mistake, since the tension in the book at that point is unreal. Last edited by Riff Magnum; 04-15-2009 at 05:27 PM. |

Wow, $99.99 MSRP for 3 movies that are a guaranteed double-dip. I think I'm going to pass.
Since this trilogy is now a catalog title, I really think they need to get the street price on something like this down to $15-20/film. To me, a $50 +/-$5 street price for this type of a short term solution for LOTR seems more reasonable. |

Have you read any of the other forums here- there is at least one covering this-
But, yes, it isnt rumored, it was stated that the EE will be coming out as some tie in to either the first hobbitt movie's theatrical release, or tied in to after both movies have been released and the Hobbit Movies hit BRD in some massive box set. I dont remember which one, but since the first Hobbit doesnt come out till 2012, and most likely Decmeber ala LOTR, that is a minimum of 3 yrs in any case. The theatricals are coming in Q4 of this year, hopefully November 20-ish like the EE DVD did. So, for me this double dipping is not that big a deal as I will get 3 yrs of use out of them (give or take a little time) before the EE BRD's come out. And, the thing I have always said about PJ and the LOTR's DVD's is you always know up front what the release plan is, so I never felt screwed in the typical double-dipping way as I have the info necessary to make a choice as a consumer. I happily pay twice because what you get in the EE is so much more and worth it. To this day, the only 3 movies I have watched every bonus feature for and felt that the bonus footage was worthy. And, to whomever, and it happens like clockwork, brought up TOM BOMBADIL again, I am 99% certain that PJ has confirmed that there were no shots filmed of that sequence and that it got cut cause he felt it messed with the flow of his vision for the film version of the books and wouldnt add anything to the story. SO, unless he is lying so he can dump a super surprise on us and he really does have the footage, can we please stop with the hopes of this fat singing bastard showing up. Not sure what MSRP that guy is looking at, but a 99 MSRP = 34 a BRD.
I know there are deals to be had, but most new release BRD's without any special coupon or anything I always see at Best Buy for around 24.99 to 34.99. After the first week of release they average around 25-30. The amazon link I though was 70 bucks for the set = 23 per movie which is right in line with what i would expect to pay. They never come out MSRP on the first week of release, so I dont see any problem with the pricing. |

If you sign up for pre-order on amazon it's $69.99. I'd say that's more than reasonable. I also have a hard time believing any LOTR freak, regardless of which version you prefer, will be able to hold off on buying these, no matter what you say on an internet forum. One day, you'll see it at Best Buy and you'll think, "what the hell am i waiting for? Middle-earth, here i come!" |
