So what are the main drawbacks to this player, in layman's terms.

I have an HDR10 only set, no Dolby Vision, and just wanna watch UHD blu-ray without having to upgrade my AVR.

There are no drawbacks for me.

I am such a newbie...lol what is AVR and HDR10? I have a 1080p plasma and don't wanna upgrade the TV itself yet, but want to be able to have a 4k player since they're backwards compatible and I imagine will still look better.

It's my understanding that the dolby capable chips aren't quite ready for mass production so the early 4k players are going without it.
Isn't it odd that many of the new 4K disks will have
Dolby Vision yet no players to output DV.

IMO, why not go ahead and put it in there. If you buy a disc now, and then later have a DV player, you can enjoy it. Or, they could double dip.

Default Early 4k adopter, best way to determine how screwed (or not) I am

Hey Folks,

Long time blu fan and lurker of the forums. Going to be much more active now. Hello!

So the UHD Blu Ray has me salivating, however, I need to assess how screwed I am. Reason being, I bought my 4k Samsung TV and Yamaha AVR at the end of 2014.

What is the easiest way for me to understand what limitations I will have with the new UHD Blu Ray players? I assume there are things from the TV and AvR perspective.

Can someone help me with what compliant technologies I need to be looking for?

I am going to go UHD, but a new TV/AVR are not in my cards for awhile....

Thanks!

D

Still impressive! If people didn't care about the new format, a standard BD player would be #1.

I must have missed something. Didn't you need hdmi 2.0/hdcp 2.2 in the whole link, tv+avr+player+cables+movie for any UHD disc to play on 4K or 1080p tv?

And will you get better downconversion with a UHD title on a 1080p tv for now until upgrade?

edit: Ahh missed all new players have 2 hdmi so you can run audio that way on a older avr

What's your exact tv model?

Yes you can. The word is that it'll downscaled it to 1080l.

Any particular reason? I have a trade-in processing, so I'll be getting this with 100% Trade-in credit.

I would love for Sony to release one, but they seem more digital focused than anything else.

Has Samsung said anything about a release date/month for this player in Europe?
Yes, it can be preordered at amazon and best buy but both don't ship it to Europe. Is there any store which does?

I like the form factor on the Philips more, I trust them more as a brand, and I think the final price will be the same or lower.
