A good friend talked to a tech at Samsung. He was told the up coming Samsung UHD 4K Blu-ray player will have to be connected to the Internet in order to playback UHD titles. He said the connection is used to confirm country code and other things.
Has there been any confirmation of this elsewhere?

Thanks!

Hmm kinda sucks, as I don't have Internet. I was hoping it would only be a one time thing

The player, not the television.

Of course that stuff doesn't matter at all for movie purists, I'm probably going to have to go for a Samsung SUHD, although none of the 2016 models have FALD and when they do release a FALD later in the year it'll almost certainly be too expensive for me.

Seems I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Luckily for me, with all the things I like to consider, gaming lag isn't one. It would just make it even worse lol.

I was not expecting the 16 OLED's to already hit the specs they did, so the "B" series is on my watch list and hopefully we get more details in the next few months.

I haven't heard this. In fact I don't think the manual mentions it at all. Also, aren't the UHD discs supposed to be region free?

The short answer is: no. You need HDMI 2.0a / HDCP 2.2 for UHD, and any AVR that has these specifically states it (they didn't even have the chips available in 2014 when this AVR was out).

2.0a is solely for transmission of HDR metadata. Even the 'lite' HDMI 2.0 chips can still accept up to 2160p60 SDR inputs, so as long as an amp has HDCP 2.2 then it will receive/pass through some form of UHD information from these players. Unfortunately 392's Yammy probably doesn't even have that.

It doesn't, but thanks for answering the question again.

Default Yeah the shipping update is February 12th through my Best Buy Order

Much like others who did the same; the one shame is while we will have the player in hand, we won't be able to test ANY 4k Blu Ray movies until March 1st. Here's hoping maybe they will release the titles earlier with the advance player shipping times?

Getting excited to try this out.

I'm thinking I'll try "The Martian" on BD first then buy the UHD. As per Internet, yes gotta connect for updates as I don't have PC.

Derb, I don't mean to be overly critical, and I'd like to apologize if I'm offending you, but your decision to buy the BD first, and then buy the 4k Blu-ray second, makes exactly no sense at all. The 4k Blu-ray package also contains the Blu-ray disc, so why would you want to waste money buying the Blu-ray to begin with?

Now of course, if you've never seen 'The Martian', it might seem that it would be in your best interest to buy it in 2k to see if it's worth a 4k purchase, but even that doesn't make sense. If you want to find out if it's a keeper, why don't you just spend a few bucks renting it out. If it measures up, then buy the 4k package.

But please, forgive me for being too sensible. Here in the United States this is a presidential-election year, and so common sense is at a premium.

Thank you for being understanding and forgiving of my sometimes-harsh attitude. Speaking of BD collections, I suspect that many of us who are going to buy a 4k BD player may have a hard time deciding when and if to buy a standard Blu-ray movie. Just today at Best Buy I spent about $35 for the sixth season of 'Downton Abbey and the remake of 'Far From the Madding Crowd.' That's both really good and really bad. I can be wretchedly unlucky, and so I have no doubt that DA will come out in 4k in 2017, as will The Madding Crowd.

I'm really hoping that studios grant wide acceptance of the 4k format, and release new 4k movies at the same time as standard Blu-rays. We'll have to pay more for 4k, but if it's done right, it would be worth the money as far as I'm concerned.

I just picked up Pan (bluray) for $10, was going to originally just wait for the UHD disc but when it hits that price point I don't mind buying it twice. Now if it turns out to be a horrible movie I will skip the UHD disc, of course unless that drops in price to $20 or less.

Default So i just looked up my Foxconnect order of The Martian 4k

And it looks like the date has changed! It now says February 9th instead of March 1 which means it looks like we will have some movies to watch when the Samsung player ships out shortly after, excited news indeed.
