It's the Samsung UN48JU6400 and I have turned on BD Wise on the BD player which uses Dynamic mode and turns out to be the best setting I have seen. I also have the player on 4:4:4 color. Not sure what is causing those washed out backgrounds as everything else looks incredible.

For one thing, you want Deep Color set to OFF in the player.

HDMI UHD Color on the input the player is connected to set to ON.

And here's the other problem: your budget display does not have a 10 bit panel (UHD Blu-ray's start out at 10 bit), it's 8 bit. You have to move up the model food chain to get a true 10 bit panel and later on in the year even further up to get a 12 bit Dolby Vision capable panel and Dolby Vision UHD player for 12 bit Dolby Vision encoded UHD discs.

So... no matter what you do, you're going to end up with some level of banding because two of the video bits have been truncated.

Deep Color is off. HDMI UHD Color you mean HDMI Color Format? That's set to YCbCr (4:4:4). Another member just informed that its the source material.

HDMI UHD Color is a setting on the display itself (on a per source basis) that allows the TV to process 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 signals correctly.

The source is not the problem as other owners have seen zero banding... though, it all depends on the display they're using and the various combinations of settings via the player and the TV.

Your TV must also be 10 bit capable. It appears your model is not.

I can't find HDMI UHD Color on my set. I guess I don't have it

So that issue I'm experiencing is called "colour banding"?

Correct. 8 bits don't reproduce enough video information for ultra fine color gradation, so you get a blocky mess.

Thanks so much for all the help. I learn something new everyday, specially with 4K.

Does anyone know if Sony 4K TVs have a 10 bit panel?

I have a Sony XBR 70 850B and it only has an 8bit.

Question to anyone who may know, is it a waste to purchase this player and connect it to my TV? As in would I notice any increased picture quality over Blu-ray?

Not a waste at all even if you don't have HDR and have an 8 bit panel. I compared the BD and the 4K disc of The Martian and the 4K looks significantly twice as better.

Color banding is not a deal breaker as its very minimal and not that serious but I do like to notice these sort of things.

Thanks Leonidas_King! Appreciate the feedback. I bought my TV before my wife and I got married in Oct. 2015 and there's no way I'm gonna be able to upgrade for a while. But I can convince her we need this player. I'm itching to get one now!

Once hitting MENU on the TV remote, click on PICTURE, scroll down to PICTURE OPTIONS then scroll down to HDMI UHD COLOR.

I have the Samsung JU7500 and that is how my menu is laid out.
Hope that helps.

Thank you montyb.

Unfortunately this model does not have HDMI UHD Color option.

You'd think deep Color would ruin the picture but it absolutely does not. Set it to auto with RGB enhanced & if the picture looks like a mess, it ain't a UHD.

I was at Best Buy today and purchased a new 4K TV and one of these UHD Blu-ray players. Unfortunately they didn't have it in stock, but it'll be shipped to the store by Wednesday. I purchased San Andreas and Mad Max to test it out .

If someone outside North America imported this player then this information might be useful. It seems like the power supply inside the player is 110-240 volt even if it says 110 volt only in the manual. Check the attached picture. The post below is copied from a forum in UK.

I'd suggest that if anyone else is importing you open it up to check just in case different batches have different components. You just have to unscrew 4 screws on the back and 4 on the power board to flip it over and look. Very easy.

Grats,

Mad Max has some improvement over the BD. San Andreas, not so much.

Yeah I read the San Andreas review after I bought it. Not too upset though because I didn't have the Blu-ray yet anyway. I am very excited to watch Mad Max.

Depends on what you have your player set to. I would have thought that if it was set to BD-wise that it would be 1080P. But certainly its default otherwise for auto is likely to be 3840p when connected to a UHD TV.
