Thinking about just getting the BDPS6500 for the 4K upscaling and Blu-ray 3D since the PS4 is the biggest piece of shit 3D player ever, buy the UHD combo packs for new releases, selective about catalogs since they're combos anyways, and wait on Sony to announce their player. Not a fan of the length and curve of the samsung player.

[Show spoiler]That's what she said.

sony says possibly by the end of the 2016 fiscal year, which is march 2017, so not anytime soon. thats a long wait.

Correct, but I expect Sony will have a 4K BD player by Q3 '16.

For my home I'm going with Samsung's UBD-K8500 simply because I can't wait for any other player to see all of the glory that's packed in 4K, HDR, P3 color, true 10-bit and PQ gamma. For $399 you too can be the King and Queens of the bleeding edge of video display advancements in your home.

Once, Sony, Panasonic and or OPPO come out with 4K BD players I'll move my Samsung to another 4K TV.

I wonder there UHD player can use on bluray pure audio for music. I prefer no video less nosing. More I like purely music.

I already have a 4K TV and my AV receiver is a Yamaha YHT-497 5.1-Channel Home Theater System and it says it has 4K pass through. So is the receiver 4K ready for when I decide to get a 4K UHD player?

It depends on what the receiver's 4K specs are. All 4K inputs/outputs are not created equal. But if you get a 4K player it may be advisable to get one with dual HDMI outputs, that way you can pipe the audio to the receiver and the video to the TV. Or you can use the ARC function. But if you receiver features HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 you should be all set (and future proofed as far as possible). I'd imagine as your receiver features 4K UHD pass-through you should be fine.

Don't be so sure chip. Not all 4K passthrough is created equal, as some manufacturers made a point of deliberately leaving out HDCP 2.2 in favour of full bandwidth 18 Gb/s HDMI chips a year or two ago (because chips featuring BOTH were still very thin on the ground at that point). That's why the manual for the Samsung UHD player makes a clear reference to AACS 2.0 copy protection (inclusive of HDCP 2.2) possibly not allowing 4K passthrough on a AV receiver, hence the dual HDMI output as you say.

That's right, Yamaha and Denon left out HDCP 2.2 for their 2014 products: http://www.techradar.com/news/televi...cp-2-2-1256763

although to Denon's credit they've offered HDCP 2.2 upgrades for certain kit since: http://usa.denon.com/us/news/news/143

My model is from 2014, so that means I need to go the 2 HDMI route than?

I'd say it's highly likely, yeah. But seeing as the players have two outputs for just this eventuality it's not a major issue.

I am somewhat geeky with this sort of thing, but all this HDMI 2.0/2.2/2.2a compatibility, 4K passthrough (but not really!), and 4K TVs that are going to be incompatible with UHD players is completely ridiculous.

If 4K is a failure upon launch it's because the industry took too many "transition" years to get their crap sorted, not because there is no market for it.

Yeah, I do like that and hoping most 4K players give us the 2 HDMI slot option as that seems to make it easier for hooking up.

I remember reading that they'd hobbled some 4K receiver's outputs even though they looked like newest spec at a glance, but I thought the 4K UHD badge was supposed to mean the full-Monty when it comes to playback? but as we've seen from TVs this isn't going to be the case either. We'll see TV and players with the branding that aren't quite as capable as some of their competition.

But as I said to detective392, if they're receiver isn't up to snuff, then ARC or dual-HDMI should suffice one way or another.

What badge would that be, chip? AFAIK there's been no kind of unified 4K/UHD standard until the announcement of the UHDA's badging at this year's CES. Until now everyone's been dancing to their own beat, and some will continue to do so if Sony's 'meh' response to the UHDA's certification program is anything to go by.

HDCP and HDMI aren't even the same thing, which neatly underlines your point about all the confusion this is causing for consumers with 'legacy' 4K gear.

I guess being in the UK we will get to see how these players pan out before we buy since there's still no date on any of them being released here as far as I can see.

Gives me a bit more time to save I guess and see what consumers have to say about them across the pond.

is it a good idea to upgrade my older HDMI cables? I don't even know what speed they are. Haven't bought any in a few years now.

I punted on my preorders. I've just about talked myself into one of the 2016 OLED's so I am sitting on the side for a few more months until we see some pricing. A friend is also trying to send me in another direction with a JVC RS400... So, time to take a chill pill. Ive learned enough in the past with impulse buys.

On a happy note I watched the Scorch Trials in lowly 1080p tonight and it looked pretty good

Really tempted by the OLEDs but to date they have all been pretty poor for gaming. So I really hope that the 2016 sets have improved on the input lag of last years flagship which was a really poor 49ms.

Of course that stuff doesn't matter at all for movie purists, I'm probably going to have to go for a Samsung SUHD, although none of the 2016 models have FALD and when they do release a FALD later in the year it'll almost certainly be too expensive for me.

Seems I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Thanks for the clarification. I suppose I still don't quite understand it, but I am getting close.

Honestly, I am interested in this and cannot keep up. How the hell is the average consumer supposed to get it?
