It's weird all companies didn't come out the gate on all devices alerting you of HDR (a feature I love on my KS8000 tv).

Not weird at all considering that HDR is still such a novelty to most

It has an issue with loading some 3D blu-rays. I tried to find out if its an issue with the one player I tried ,or this model. When I buy a new player and a new format I try everything the player offers. Out of all the 3D discs I have and that's many , only 2 would load and play ,where my old sony 3D player ,plays them all. Before I returned the player I searched everywhere to see if anybody else has an issue like this. Came up empty. To bad ,its a good player for the price.

I haven't seen a 4k disc yet without HDR.However I have seen many cheap 4K TV without HDR and receivers without a HDR pass thru.I have found if a product has HDR its listed under specs ,if not it won't be listed.

I was just looking at this player and I noticed that it has no support for decoding Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Isn't that the audio format for UHD? I can just have my receiver decode it using "Direct", I suppose, but I was surprised. I was looking at 4K TVs the other day and I was floored. I have the receiver so far but I'm starting to do research on other components now that I have the itch. Well, since this is the only player out there, I guess that narrows the possibilities a little So what are showrooms using for their demo pictures? Can't be all this player.

The players do not do any decoding of Dolby Atmos or DTS: X. The player must, however, be able to send a raw audio bitstream via HDMI to a receiver or pre-amp with those decoders (now called renderers) on board. That leaves the Xbox One S out of the equation. It does not bitstream. The Samsung, Panasonic, and Philips do.

OK, I'm just confusing myself, which isn't all that unusual for me It's been awhile since I made these settings. I do have my Sony bitstreaming to my Marantz for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master but that's because I wanted the receiver to decode the audio. I seem to remember that the Sony can decode TrueHD and DTS-HD Master but the spec sheet only states TrueHD decoding. The spec sheet for the UBD-K8500 mentions only TrueHD and DTS Master-HD but says nothing about decoding. Does that mean that it can decode these also but not Atmos and DTS:X? Now I know why I'm confused. Can you clarify?

What problem are you having and what are some discs that don't work and what discs do?

Yes. It can decode the lossless channel-based cores of Dolby and DTS and send unzipped/decompressed, multi-channel PCM. It takes special decoding for object-based data, which is included in extension files added to these codecs (audio objects and instructional metadata for the renderer). For that you need Atmos and X positional renderers. They're too complex for players to do this heavy lifting.

Very nice detail in your explanation. Thank you. I'll have to read a bit more on this. Sounds extremely interesting. Always takes me awhile to grasp things before I make a purchase

Though the deliverable methods are different for immersive audio for the cinema than the home, the basic tenants of both are similar in what they are trying to accomplish: scalable, three-dimensional audio with pin-point precision.

Here's Dolby's quick explanation of Atmos:

Atmos for the home allows for, currently, 24.1.10 (34.1) rendered speaker positions. For that, you need a Trinnov Altitude and a large bank account. There have been discussions of selling an add-on unit that would bump the Trinnov up to the cinema version's 64 positions.

That's the beauty of object-based audio like Atmos: it's completely scalable to whatever size theater you want and can afford.

Wow, this is really a clever, innovative approach. Not only can you create a sound field at literally any position around you but overhead as well. Talk about immersive. The file-based solution is a great model. Instead of object-oriented programming languages we now have object-oriented audio. Pretty wild stuff and I think it will transform the home theater experience in ways we have never seen. That's what I need....scalability. It just makes sense. Very cool. Thanks again. The audio format for UHD BD is identical to a 2K BD. The UHD BD format made no changes to the audio. They only made changes to the video.

Your Marantz can do 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos rendering right now (with two added overhead speakers), with the DTS: X upgrade supposedly coming late summer.

I have a Marantz 7702 mk II pre-amp and I'm running a 7.1.4 system right now.

The $349 price drop should be available through all Samsung authorized dealers. As inventory builds up and sales slow rebates begin.

Nice, I'll have to start checking out overhead speakers, too.

Awesome Marantz and system you have. On mine, I have the pre-outs running through a Peachtree powering the fronts right now. Sounds really nice. Never had a separate amp powering fronts before.
