Samsung tvs currently don't have an actual indicater.

Once you learn and figure out the differences between sdr and hdr, its easy to spot (colors more solid, less clipping/blowout around people and obects).

Your backlight and contrast will kick to max.

Also, play with dynamic contrast under the advanced settings. If the picture gets much brighter like turning on a light switch as you go higher in the setting, your watching HDR. I prefer medium and sometimes high as it brings out more pop and color.

Go to Menu. Your backlight should be at max. That's the easiest way to tell without relying on spotting image differences.

Except for that both sony and samsung users have reported that after playing hdr content, the tv will sometimes automatically do the settings snapback with regular 4k material, a glitch of some sort. As if the tv wrongly learned to do this at times other than when reading hdr metadata.

So this method of testing isn't 100%.

i'd wager that there's a status menu you can pull up.

My LG tells me everything about the source that its getting, I dont' see why it wouldn't say HDR too if you have an HDR tv (mine isn't)

But the cable is NO different. Wires wrapped in plastic. Same number of wires, same amount of plastic.

Typically yes: I can confirm that my LG displays an "HDR is on" message.

Hasn't happened to everyone, but it's happened to a few on each side.

I'm seriously considering preordering this. The 45 day return policy at Best Buy should be plenty of time to determine if it's worth keeping.

I have the Samsung UHD 4k Player on pre-order. Just need a TV. I do apologize for the question below.....

I am asking for much needed advice so I can plan accordingly.

My 1080p Plasma is finally on its way out. It was a good 11 years but now the time has come to upgrade. Thankfully UHD Blu-Ray will be releasing this year so I might as well upgrade to 4k.

Question I have is......should I wait for LG OLED 2016 models and pay upwards of $5000 bucks???? Doing so will definitely be a hardship financially, but also do-able with planning on my part.

Or should I just wait on the OLED a few more years for the tech to develop and get cheaper and instead, settle for just a LED model for around $1200-2,000?
I have looked at TVs and coming from my Plasma, I almost find the quality of the picture of the LED almost inexcusable.....I have been spoiled with amazing contrast and black levels for the last 11 years.

Thoughts?

I'm in a similar boat, but I'm going to make my plasma last and hopefully the player works fine with it. Hehe

True. Looking at the 2015 LG OLED models at best buy, it just seemed like the obvious choice. Reviews of OLED so far says it handles motion very well too.

But it definitely will be hard for me to say goodbye to my Plasma. Hopefully it lasts just a bit longer so I can make a timely decision lol.

Hurry up LG and announce your price for the LG OLED65B6P! (No passive 3d nor sound bar)

Motion sure, but image retention is an issue and inaccurate colours are still an issue.
They are getting better, but the colour fade is the most worrying for me

That is partly why I feel like it might be better for me to let the format mature a bit more and just save myself some money. Can always get an OLED in a few years and move the TV I purchase now to the bedroom then.

Mike,

What TV Do you actively use?

4K Plasma would be amazing........................missed opportunity. Would be worth every watt it would take to power it.
