Still going with the X850C with the 2016 models that most are legitimately UHDA certified coming in a little over a month or two?

I speak AS an owner of the X850C-- It is a great TV, but I can't help but feel a little cheated that the UHDA held back final word on their "minimum specs" of what a true HDR display is AFTER the holiday season, announcing it at CES just a few weeks ago when it gave us only days to see if we should return and wait.

I asked the RTINGS.com staff where the X850C falls on the DCIP3 requiremnt that UHDA says needs to reach over 90%, and it literally hits 89.34%.... Like, really? I hope a lot of firmware support comes from Sony to this model and above to do something to make it better reach that spec, but it's just all poor timing.

Yup, I have no interest in HDR bar movies that were filmed with it in mind, and none exist on disc yet.
And it still supports a form of HDR and that is enough for me.
Plus the new sets are slimmer and as we leart this year the slimmer Sony sets suffer with black's and backlight issues

Same regarding hdr - am all in for new movies that support it natively but not so enthused about the thought of seeing it bolted onto classics such as Lawrence of Arabia. In any case, at least you get to play around with some form of it. I have the x810c which I've decided to stick with for now, love the contrast ratio on it (still love my Kuro too, though) and figured will just upgrade to an OLED (or whatever's the best deal at that point) a few years from now.

As for player updates, nothing new on my end. BB still has it down for a Feb. 12 release.

In mind? Being that theatrical formats' dynamic range exceeds that of existing consumer formats, I would say pretty much every movie ever produced (with a handful of notable exceptions) was "filmed with it in mind".

Or, am I misunderstanding you... ?

I am asking for much needed advice so I can plan accordingly.

My 1080p Plasma is finally on its way out. It was a good 11 years but now the time has come to upgrade. Thankfully UHD Blu-Ray will be releasing this year so I might as well upgrade to 4k.

Question I have is......should I wait for LG OLED 2016 models and pay upwards of $5000 bucks???? Doing so will definitely be a hardship financially, but also do-able with planning on my part.

Or should I just wait on the OLED a few more years for the tech to develop and get cheaper and instead, settle for just a LED model for around $1200-2,000?
I have looked at TVs and coming from my Plasma, I almost find the quality of the picture of the LED almost inexcusable.....I have been spoiled with amazing contrast and black levels for the last 11 years.

Thoughts?

I totally get what you are saying... having a awesome Pani Plasma for years it took me forever to pick out a 4k set and I'm still not totally happy with it. Granted I knew this was a temporary set till I can get a OLED with HDR this year. Since your Plasma is on the way out, could you find yourself without a TV till OLED 2016 even come out? If I had to do it over again I would have skipped out on a pre HDR LCD and instead saved that $2k for a OLED

It will last I am sure. It only drops the image for a few seconds every 15 minutes or so. Annoying but I can live with it until the OLEDs come out. I have decided to just wait until 2016 OLED release and go for it. Time to start saving up. I want the 65 inch B6.

I am guessing it will be upward of $5000.

I'm looking at the 65" E6 which is up for pre-order on Amazon at $6999, hoping for a 5k price around black friday '16

I didn't know this.

Thanks for clearing this up, because what dvdmike posted is a common sentiment. Although I might need a little more detail - is the image data "there" for all movies, just needs the HDR process to bring it out on consumer electronics?

Sidebar, am I glad I got on Robert's waiting list for this player, because Amazon still shows nada as far as an update.

This again? Movies are graded for theatrical releases, so for DCI specs and HDR is not a part of those.

Only exceptions are movies specificially graded for a Dolby Cinema (Vision) release.

Dolby Cinema theaters are like 0,000001% of the theathers worldwide....

15 movies have a Dolby Cinema Release so far (mostly from Disney)

Odd. I would think any wider dynamic-range video format would be equipped to allow a more accurate representation of the theatrical grade, even if it required a temperature shift to put the additional headroom where it could be useful. Unless there's some technical hurdle I'm not aware of, it seems a real shame to me if they're not using the format this way.

Doc Red, there's a marked difference between the dynamic range that was captured on *whatever* medium (especially w/ref to how it was intended to be viewed) and how that range applies to specific mastering for HDR content; one does not automatically equate to the other.

Penton has posted this link before and here it is again, about how HDR mastering differs for something specifically shot with HDR in mind and something that was not: http://www.etcentric.org/smpte-webin...lenges-of-hdr/

You're quite right that the P3 colour of the theatrical grades should be able to be translated across to these new discs without incident (chroma subsampling aside, so it's still not exactly a 1:1 representation of the master) but the extant dynamic range will need careful handling in HDR so as not to contravene the express intent of the original work.
