Default Either Samsung or Marantz is on the frtiz

Well, something bad happened to my Samsung K8500 or my Marantz NR1607 over the weekend. I popped in Rise of the Planet of the Apes 4K disc on Sunday night and the Samsung let out its usually high pitched whine, the audio sputtered at the start, and then it said the Marantz NR1607 was no longer HDCP 2.2 compliant and it then refused to play audio. I have the video HDMI going directly to my LG and the audio HDMI going to the Marantz. Now, I'm not sure what exactly happened because now the Marantz won't play audio. Everything had been working perfectly earlier that day as well. I had used it to play audio from my iPhone and I should also mention and last week I had updated to the newest firmware for the Samsung and the Marantz was up to date as well. So it's a weird chicken-and-the-egg situation where I'm not sure if the Marantz just kicked the bucket or the Samsung caused some type of issue with it, or if the Samsung just junked out. I'm going to take the Marantz to Best Buy tonight as I got the Geek Squad protection, and we'll see what the diagnosis is. I'm really interested to see what actually happened because it seemed to all happen at once.

The Marantz I'd be surprised if it just had gotten bricked like that. I've never had issues with them. The Samsung K8500 on the other hand, would not surprise me in the least if it was bricked as the sounds that thing make must be causing some type of crazy torture on it's internal components.

Are you just pumping audio to the Marantz? I'm not sure why it would need 2.2 compliance for the audio. Perhaps the firmware upgrade has changed the settings (I thought the second HDMI was audio only?) and it's trying something funky.

If HDMI 1 is going to your LG, then sending the audio with HDMI 2 shouldn't have any issues with HDCP. I'd try a factory reset of the player and swapping out cables and HDMI inputs.

Best Buy

Yep just audio pumping through. I swapped cables and inputs and also did a reset on both and the player still plays fine through the TV at 4K with audio through one HDMI cable but now I can't get audio out of the Marantz so I'm leaning towards thinking something just broke inside the receiver and the player still functions fine. It's just odd the marantz was working without issue until I fired up a 4K disc. Until now I've never had an issue with marantz products but there is a first time for everything I guess

The Samsung's firmware update didn't change the output settings? Do your other devices work with the Marantz?

Nope. Tested AppleTV, AirPlay, and the Samsung switching inputs through the receiver and they didn't work, so looking to be a Marantz issue and not a Samsung one.

Try the analogue inputs, if they work the HDMI board has had it. I'm not sure which model you have, you might be lucky and have a front facing HDMI input you can use temporarily.

Awesome idea regarding testing the analogue inputs I didn't even think of that.

Anyone here have (or had) issues with this POS K8500 where you don't get sound output from the HDMI sub out on the back?

I've had this POS player for 6 months and I've used it, twice, TWICE in the 6 months. First time was 5 months ago when I bought "Get Out" BR and I didn't get sound. I could get it from the TV but not the player. I tried everything and after 40mins wasted on this POS player I had to factory reset the player and then it worked.

I keep the HDMI audio out on the player to AUTO.

Now, a month later, I am using this POS player for the second time since I got it 6 months ago and I put in John Wick 4K BR in it and once again, no bloody sound! I've tried everything again, even did a reset and no sound! Tried 4 different HDMI cables, nope. Tried another factory reset, nope. Tried another disc, nope. Tried turning it off, nope. Tried, unplugging from the back, nope. WHAT A TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP this thing this! I am this close to smashing it to pieces.

I even did the new update just tonight.

What the hell is going on? Like I want to be wasting 45mins every single time I want to use it? Oh honey, better put aside an extra hour because i got to get the sound working on this crap of a player.

Good choice. I've had this player for 6 months, used it TWICE in 6 months and it's a total piece of crap. I will never buy another Samsung player ever again.

This is why you should never be an early adopter. I should have kept the Philips 4K player, much better player.

What are you guys doing to this thing when you get it? I bought mine a week before general release thanks to HHGREGG putting them out early and I've had two separate, non related problems. Once it wouldn't read a dvd and once it froze when I left it paused for damn near 30 minutes. Other than that it's been a flawless player. I love it. It's been nothing less than great!

I share your experience. Can't really complain. This player does what it's supposed to

Mine has been turned on twice this year.

For Get out BR and then John Wick 2 UHD.

I guess I'm over straining the hardware since the HDMI audio out seems to be crapping out on me. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

Actually ended up going with the next model up from this one the M8500 (the revision of the K8500). Guess what? Samsung restored functionality to search by time index ON THE FRAME so I can get my perfect still frames on both bluray and media files. The OS is different too as is the remote which is an improvement over the shitty one that came with the K8500. This one is longer, uses regular AA batteries instead of lithium and easier to use and has an option for numeric input. Still wish it illuminated but it is what it is. Overall I am MUCH happier with the M8500. PQ is better too, I re-watched 1492 yesterday and it looked like crap on the K8500 and there was a substantially better picture on the M8500. Seriously, the difference is night and day between the M8500 and the K8500. My advice to anyone with the K8500 is to take it back and get the M8500.

No 3D support on the M8500. Bummer

I believe that the brand new 4K player is only $199.99 at Best Buy i'm most likely going to be grabbing it later this week since i finally got some of my tax rebate back only one of the checks waiting on the 2nd one now.

It is also $199.99 at Costco. However I would recommend the unit refurbished by Samsung since it is half the price and comes with the same warranty from Samsung.

If Sony's two players do get a DV update this summer, it looks like a pretty decent mid-priced unit with universal playback if you cannot afford the premium Oppo brand units.
