What am i reading? Why in the world would you use zoom, making the picture worse, and destroying the intended look of the movie?

Presumably it will require an update for Ultra HD Blu-ray's as well?

To all the people that already bought movies, did you see any of them with slipcovers at Best Buy?

LG's new 55" 2016 TV is now available at B&H or Amazon for $2k. Includes Dolby Vision.

From what I've seen posted online none of the fox wave have slips, but people have posted pics of WB titles that look to have a slipbox or slipcover of some sort.

Because, for many, it's still about how pretty things look, regardless of how they represent the intended look of the original material.

Which is what worries me about HDR.

On that subject, perhaps it's my paltry 42" Panny plasma I find it impossible to believe that anything (UHD BD) can make the pictures look 'fuzzy' or the colour 'drained'. Unless that other something is boosting the colour beyond natural levels.

Colour doesn't "pop" in real life!

You should have your movies and player taken away if you zoom a blu-ray...

Ok, I gave these settings a try last night and the picture did improve noticeably. I still think Dynamic Contrast on Medium may be a little too hot for what I'm used to, but I can't deny the UHD movies looked great. And I guess I could always settle for Low as a compromise.

I didn't get a chance to A-B the Blu-rays after I switched the settings to see if that widened the gulf between the two transfers, but I can at least say that the UHD discs do benefit from those changes.

I got it from the AVS forum
From the "10 bit Gradient Test Patterns" thread in the Display Calibration section.

Because at the end of the day I am my own person and not a mindless cyborg that does what someone tells me I should do. I do what I want. Especially in my own house.

With that said, sometimes I just want the picture bigger since I was not willing to spend 6-7k on a 75"+ tv.

I hate full zoom, but oppo has a very good compromise where it zooms but still has black bars at the top&bottom.

For what it's worth, I usually don't zoom the 1st time I watch a movie. But occasionally do afterwards.

Ray, is that dynamic contrast setting @ medium referring to a TV setting? I don't see it on the player.

I downloaded a few of those and the 10-bit patterns look as smooth as buttah on my 2014 Sony 4K. Whether it's a true 10-bit panel or 8-bit + Hi-FRC (more likely) or just really really really good dithering down to 8-bit, the patterns are no problem.

I fail to see how this would be the last physical format.

The internet simply couldn't handle the stress if every last bit of media went online only. There's always going to be a demand for physical media no matter how niche it is and as long as that demand is there someone is going to be around to profit from it.

I bet people said the exact same thing about vinyl and that's selling more today than it has done in the last 10+years. They said CDs were on the way out, yet I see no sign of it going anywhere soon.

Maybe if compression becomes good enough to match the quality of physical media I could see streaming taking over, but ISPs need to come a long way in terms of data caps and throttling before we can take on an all digital consumption environment.

Well it's the last physical format until 8K comes along. They were saying the same thing about Blu-ray went it first came out.

Whenever 8K comes to the mass market it will still use the same HDR, WCG and PQ. Hopefully the panels will be 12-bit, but nothing in the 8K signal will require a new change in the TV system standards, other than the resolution.

The new 2016 TV standards are set for the next 20 - 30 years.
