California Gov. Gavin Newsom is letting florists, clothing stores, sporting goods stores, and bookstores to reopen if they have curbside pickup. But he's keeping everything else closed: offices, restaurants, shopping malls.

It's becoming a very "Socialism for thee, but not for me" situation for declaring what business is essential.
Montreal was going to start opening things up, but now they've changed their minds....and pushed things back. Montreal is one of Canada's hot spots.

I fear the populace will turn on the Governor, and ultimately itself, if it keeps being rolled out piecemeal. I really hope I end up being wrong though.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason other than 'no people indoors'. I'm not sure why florists are essential.

There is a huge condensed population along the coast in California & if he was to just open the flood gates I am positive that the cases of Corona would skyrocket & put even more of a burden on the Healthcare system. As far as the why florists are essential, I don't know maybe just a bit of normalcy to the chaos. Just my thought, doesn't really impede or help the overall situation either.

Security Guard shot and killed after telling customer to wear a mask

(CNN) — A security guard at a Family Dollar store in Flint, Michigan, was shot and killed after telling a customer to wear a state-mandated face mask, police said.

Calvin Munerlyn, 43, died at a local hospital after he was shot in the head Friday, said Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser.

The shooter and a second suspect remain at large, Kaiser told CNN on Monday.

Witnesses at the store told police that Munerlyn got into a verbal altercation with a woman because she was not wearing a mask, said Genesee County prosecutor David Leyton. Surveillance video confirms the incident, Leyton said.

Under an executive order from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, all retail employees and customers have to wear a mask.

Footage also shows that immediately after the altercation, the woman left in an SUV.
But about 20 minutes later, the SUV returned.

Two men entered the store and one of them yelled at Munerlyn about disrespecting his wife, Leyton said. The other man then shot the security guard.

“This is senseless. Over a mask. Over a mask?” Munerlyn’s cousin, Tina James, told CNN affiliate WJRT. “This is not the way to do things right now. We need to come together.”

Family Dollar did not respond to a request for comment.

A "reopening" isn't about which businesses are essential. At least it's not the determining factor. Among other things it's about whether they need to open their building facilities to function and how safely they're able to offer their goods and services with respect to health and distancing guidelines.

I get that, but it looks like big businesses are being favored here. And I'm not quite sure that they're safer too (more employees, more congregation).

It would be nice if all independent shops have curbside pickup set up, but the vast majority of independent florists or clothing stores or bookstores don't even have websites, let alone pickup ability.

It irks me. It is irksome.

I get it, I really do. This whole situation is just really crappy. My only child is graduating college next Friday & their commencement ceremony was canceled. My work has placed a tether on myself & my fellow co-workers & we are not allowed to travel outside a 75 mile radius from work until July 1st. My Wife & daughter reside in Texas currently so I can't even fly there to at least celebrate my daughter's milestone achievement. I want everything to return back to normal as quickly as tbe next person, maybe more so. The first half of 2020 has been really rough y'all.

I can't see curbside pickup helping much for clothing stores, sporting goods or florists. If people can browse for clothes and sporting goods, flowers at their local Target, Safeway or Costco, then they should be able to at a specialty store as well. It's ridiculously unfair and as long as these smaller shops can maintain the same social distancing standards as the big box stores, then they should be allowed to open.

Again though, it's curbside pickup. You can pickup books, flowers, etc from some shops that allow you to place orders. So those places make sense to open first. Restaurants and hairdressers and malls involve crowds of people going inside small areas (small mall stores, hairdressers involving close proximity, tables close together in restaurants). There won't be crowds of people in a florist shop. The idea is to reduce crowds once they start opening things back up.

But when does safe distancing apply and when is it allowed to be relaxed? At some point in the florist shop, you need to approach the counter, to either discuss an arrangement if you need something custom, or at least to possibly exchange money. At some point your going to break the 6-foot rule. But I doubt there will be major crowds at a florist shop. Popular mall stores though can get pretty crowded fast. When I go to bath & body works with my girlfriend, those are often pretty packed.

My favorite small local pizza shop doesn't even allow credit card payments - they don't even have a machine - it's cash only.

Clothing stores are pretty important but they get busy, plus people are handling and trying on clothes and then putting them back on the rack for somebody else to try on.

Cash is so unsanitary, I can see a lot of places going card only now. I think my work may now be forced to go from paper checks to online deposit because of social distancing.

What the hell is wrong with people? I know I keep asking that, but really! He sure showed him. That'll teach the security guard to disrespect his wife. Now he can spend the next 20 years or more (hopefully life) in prison thinking about what a great choice it was to come back and show him who's boss.

What goes on in people's minds?

You have to wonder what results he was expecting? Did it escalate and he thought he was just going to push his weight around at first? Or did he just walk in and shoot him? Clearly he walked in armed.
