New York did over 10,000 tests yesterday alone. Of those, about 30% are found to be positive. Look at another way, 70% of those being tested don't have it. And these are mostly from people who were thought to have symptoms and/or be in contact with someone with the disease. Yes, there are several thousand out there that do, but the number of daily new cases are going to start getting lower eventually once the effects of these social distancing measures kick in.

Also it is a city so it is bound to have higher numbers. More people in a concentrated space.

If you look at a map you'll see that a lot of the places that have it are cities and major travel hubs.

It's also begun offering workers who are pregnant, 65 years old or older, or who have underlying health risks, access to paid leave for up to 30 days. Target joins Amazon and Walmart which are offering extra incentives like cash bonuses or a temporary wage bump as they try to manage the crush of customers while simultaneously looking to keep their workers happy.

It's going to take several weeks at least for tests to even remotely catch up with positive cases. So in the meantime it's going to skew the growth curve to make it looks worse than is probably is.

In regards to my question earlier about checking/opening mail.. Just saw this.

"In a ProPublica report published this week, two mail carriers told the outlet they’d been pressured to stay on their routes despite showing symptoms of COVID-19.

Ten letter carriers also told ProPublica they’d been given little or no hand sanitizer. All spoke on condition of anonymity."

Just wash your hands after opening the letters and discarding the envelopes, without touching anything else in the meantime, and you'll have nothing to worry about.

In at least one of those cases, the carrier is being completely irresponsible. If a nurse told them that they likely have coronavirus, why would they continue working? Take a sick leave, or whatever, and stay home. Don't knowingly put other people's lives in danger.

In the other case, a letter carrier in the Northwest says he is still delivering mail even after a nurse told him he likely has coronavirus.
