I disagree. I believe you will see 3 to 5 times as many deaths due to CV-19 here in the US. IMO the death rate for H1N1 was very mild. We may surpass the total US H1N1 death rate by the end of April!

2. Yes, there's a very realistic chance that if I got infected, I might die from coronavirus. But guess what? That would be the least of my worries. If I'm dead, then at least there's nothing more to worry about. Instead, most of us will live and have to carry on in a world that will be drastically different from the one we had up to 2019. Nearly everyone will have lost friends, family, coworkers along the way. The world economy won't be solid again, perhaps for years or decades. Many industries might be wiped out and millions will be unemployed for an uncertain period of time, perhaps without an adequate safety net from their respective governments. Many millions might starve before the world's food supply and all supply chains are back to their pre-2020 levels. And all of that is in a reasonably optimistic scenario - one that assumes we find a vaccine within 18 months, that the virus doesn't mutate and become even deadlier, or that an entirely different virus or bacteria doesn't rear its ugly head and decimates what's left of the human population. All those scenarios might seem doomsday predictions, and yet there is nothing that guarantees they couldn't possibly happen. All we can do is hope they really are as unlikely as they sound right now. Obviously a lot of people think this will go away quickly and everything can just go back to normal. We'll see what they think 2 months from now. |

Ireland's Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, Dr. Tony Holohan, went into hospital in Dublin last night. RTÉ News reported that he was not in for tests relating to Covid-19. It is believed to be for another illness. He became unwell after he was at a media briefing in Dublin last night which had given the total number of confirmed cases & deaths for Covid-19 for the period up to yesterday (Tuesday). It is expected that he will return to work as early as tomorrow when he gets better.
Ireland's Health Prevention Surveillance Centre have said the vast majority of the deaths from Covid-19 have been for people aged over 65 years old. One thing that is a factor for these majority of deaths in this age group are from large clusters occurring in nursing home settings. There have been small numbers of people who have died from the virus within other age groups from 25-34 to 55-64 years old. There have been no deaths reported so far for people under the age of 24 years old. Most people in the country who have avoided symptoms of the virus are adhering to social & physical distancing, basic hygiene etiquette including basic hand washing. I heard a figure on the news tonight which reported between somewhere between 90% to 94% of Irish people, from an official survey, are adhering to the official health guidelines to date which helps to ease the pressure on their own health system. The largest amount of Covid-19 cases in Ireland are occurring in Dublin with 1,645 (55% of cases) followed by Cork with 255 cases (8%). https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/...virus-figures/ Ireland's government have implemented more measures to close non-essential businesses since midnight on Saturday. People are only allowed to go out of their homes for essential journeys if they need food or medicines or by attending work as an essential worker or for any medical appointments in health facilities. They are allowed to go out for exercise but only within a 2km radius from their own home. They are allowed to bring family members out with them as long they keep to the 2m social distancing guidelines. The 2km radius limit does not apply when they go shopping for food or medicine or if they are an essential worker. These restrictions are expected to last for 2 weeks until April 12th which is Easter Sunday. But the government can decide to extend that restriction if they wish but only under official advice from the chief medical officer & from the Department of Health's HPET (Health Emergency Protection Team). Another of Ireland's broadcasters was officially diagnosed with Covid-19 on Tuesday. Mr. Ryan Tubridy, who presents the Late Late Show, said in a statement on his instagram (@instatubridy) that he is over the worst of the virus. He said that he is expected to return to work very soon. It had been reported that he was out of work for a while after he suffered from a persistent cough. He had to self-isolate at home while following official guidelines. Miriam O'Callaghan was on duty to present the Late Late Show for Ryan Tubridy last Friday night. He is the 3rd broadcaster in Ireland to get the virus. Other Irish broadcasters who had Covid-19 recently are Dr. Ciara Kelly & Claire Byrne. There is good news from Idris Elba from his diagnosis. He is said to over the worst of the virus which is great news. But I also heard last night that Chris Cuomo of CNN was diagnosed with the virus. He is the brother of Andrew Cuomo who is the Governor of NY. Last edited by dublinbluray108; 04-01-2020 at 09:47 PM. |
