I know people I was in class with this term that are adamant about not learning online. Guessing they're some of the ones who tucked tail and ran after campus shut down. Also guessing they're among the number who are refusing to sign up for more classes till there's a vaccine.

Fortunately the younger kids (1-10) are not very infectious so safer for k-5 classes to resume than any other. The adults will have to avoid each other as much as possible but I'm a firm believer that a good mask will work fine in protecting each one from the other and anyway there is usually only one teacher per classroom.

Yes. Especially from dead adults.
Watch the personal attacks please. Stay in your house forever...the world will keep on turning with or without you.

What's with the snarkiness? I replied to his post about protective eyewear. I wear prescription glasses, which I consider enough protection for my eyes.

Do you wear safety glasses? Or glasses at all?

What annoys me is people who expect others to match their level of fear and standards then look down on others who don't measure up.

At the risk of sounding selfish, I feel like it's time to re-open the United States to some degree. This isn't going to end anytime soon and the economy is headed to the worst fall since the 30s. People should be allowed to choose to some degree whether or not they think it's worth the risk to go to work, school, church or out for a meal/drink with friends. I understand this is terrible and people are dying but the vaccine could be years out, if ever. At some point life needs to resume, I vote for sooner than later.

Like I said before, if a person is sick or terrified they should stay home. You can't hold up the economy forever. It's going to get to a point where many of these nearly 40M unemployed don't have jobs to come back to.

Agreed. We can't continue going on like this.

There are still jobs that are gone forever after the 2008 recession.

Ok, more of a reason to limit the damage now.

Some of these people are so terrified into thinking they are going to die if they go out their front doors.

Honestly? Most of our damage is being done in 2 New Mexico counties. Let everyone else move to some variation of Phase 2 and leave those 2 counties in Phase 1 until the numbers come down. Don't punish the whole state for the stupidity of 2 areas.

My father is one of those people. He's convinced I'm going to get Coronavirus and give it to him and he's going to die. He's the main reason I ate my Panda Express today in my car instead of taking it home. Tired of people complaining every time I spend my $.

I think social distancing is more important than wearing masks.

If he's healthy he's really got nothing to worry about. You should go about your business.

Well he is kinda on the old side and has heart issues but the chances this is going to kill him are not that high. He's just paranoid and situations like this exacerbate his paranoia.

They both are important. A case where the sum is greater than the parts, as the masks are for when you can't social distance.

This is extremely irresponsible & potentially dangerous advice. Are you an infectious disease doctor? Immunologist? If not, you should not be giving any advice concerning how others should "go about your business." Even the top doctors involved directly with COVID-19 are still learning new things almost daily. The CDC just issued a new alert to doctors across the country about the Kawasaki-like syndrome in children. Some young & "healthy" people have died from COVID-19 all across the world. Deaths are not mutually exclusive to older adults &/or those with pre-existing/underlying conditions. Sure, the risk is much higher for them, but not solely to them alone. There's a lot going on here with this virus, & you seem to be totally oblivious to much of it. Even worse is that if you are aware of a lot of what's going on & you're still offering up potentially catastrophic advice, well then, you're quite possibly doing much more harm than any good.

Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the World Health Organization's emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said, "We are seeing more and more younger individuals who are experiencing severe disease." She explained, "We've seen some data from a number of countries across Europe where people of younger age have died. Some of those individuals have had underlying conditions, but some have not."

[Show spoiler]Health experts aren't sure why some otherwise healthy, young people are suddenly dying of Covid-19, but they do have some theories.

One theory is that some people are genetically predisposed to developing more severe cases of Covid-19 than others. For example, Philip Murphy, a biomedical researcher at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told Science Magazine's Jocelyn Kaiser that variations in a person's ACE2 gene receptor potentially "could make it easier or harder for the virus to get into lung cells."

Michael Skinner, a virologist at Imperial College London, said he believes it's "very possible that some of us could have a particular genetic makeup that makes it more likely that we will respond badly to an infection with this coronavirus."

Another theory is that some patients might have low levels of surfactant, a substance the body produces to help the lungs expand and contract, as a result of the disease. If a patient lacks an adequate amount of surfactant, their lungs will become stiff, which could explain why some patients have trouble breathing even if they're on a ventilator, CNN reports.

There's also a theory that the virus could be causing what's known as a "cytokine storm" in some young patients. The phenomenon, named after cytokine proteins which are part of the immune system, causes the immune system to overreact to an external pathogen, like a virus. The response ultimately could cause a patient's immune system to attack their lungs, causing their lungs to stop delivering oxygen to the rest of their body, and leading to respiratory failure and potentially death.

Other health experts suggest that patients exposed to larger amounts of the new coronavirus could become sicker than others. Alison Sinclair, a virologist at Sussex University, said, "A person with a high viral load has more virus particles than one with a low load. We do not yet know what impact viral load has on the symptoms of a person infected with Covid-19. Whether there is a link between a high viral load and worse outcomes is going to be important to find out."

LOL I wouldn't complain if someone bought me a Joy Con Switch either, would enjoy the option once in awhile of playing my games on a bigger screen.
