Social distancing who?
This is the thing I don't get... why people just don't want to wear a mask. Now that new cases here in NY are slowing, I think it's ok that people start to go out and start living somewhat of a normal life. But people need to continue wearing masks or else, we could have a spike in cases thereby causing another lockdown. And if that happens, the longer it will take for us to get through this.

I'd definitely be down for face shields instead of masks, at least in public, I doubt work will allow anything but masks or handkerchiefs.

Things are getting back to normal here. Our local used BD and DVD store finally reopened and out local Burger King is once again offering dine-in service. The only "holdout" is our Hong Kong Buffet which will have a huge challenge reopening.

Everyone here wears a mask while shopping as do the employees. Put em on in the parking lot then take em off after leaving the store. Social distancing is so-so. No one is following the one way aisle signs at Walmart and people come right up to where you are standing, say at the meats aisle, and just reach right past you and grab what they want. I am getting tired of saying "Hey . . . WTF?"

I walked around our large shopping mall on Friday morning. It seemed like about 80% of the stores were open. Each store had an entry limit based on its size. Foot traffic was one-way only. The strangest thing is that the mall was quieter than usual except for Bath and Body Works which had a huge line up stretching around the mall (they were allowing 12 people in at a time). They did have the line-up spaced out with markings on the floor. In fact, each store had markings for line-ups but this store was the only one that had people lined up outside of it. I guess people really missed their bath products and candles.

Also, my mom tells me in her town, potting soil is the new toilet paper. You can't find it anywhere and people are fighting over it whenever it is actually in stock. Lots of bored people wanting to do some planting, I guess.

I've been seeing a lot of US license plates here in Edmonton, as well. And they're not from the border states either - I saw ones from Kentucky, Texas and South Carolina. Edmonton isn't exactly touristy either, so I'm a bit baffled.

A few points Dr. Fauci made:

Changes in positivity rates and hospitalizations, rather than new cases, are the metrics states need to follow in regards to reopenings.

A second wave isn't a certainly, especially if people continue to social distance and wear masks when appropriate.

Wolf's baiting was a little annoying, but maybe it's because I don't like the guy either.

We leave for vacation next weekend. I had my doubts it would happen, but it surely will be nice to get away. I’m still on the fence about it, but my wife and kids are 100% for going.

You sort of see the same nonchalant attitude occurring with other diseases and their prevention, e.g. ‘hey, the chances of me getting colon cancer are slim, so I don’t want no colonoscopy’ and the next thing you know, they, or someone in their family with the same sentiment comes down with metastatic colon CA years later.
agree. I might feel bad for the people over reacting but the people that are under reacting are the real problem

Yeah, the former is an issue for these people individually. The latter is an issue that affects us all.

The main reason numbers are worse than they should be in a sparsely populated state like ours and I'll try to put it in simple terms even our simple governor can understand:
It's a very impoverished state, poorer people are inversely affected by this
It's a very brown state, a demographic that's been hit heavily by this pandemic
Most people are not following the protocols, as you yourself are saying. Lot of people leaving home just to get their jollies, not for essential reasons. People leaving their counties, people having large gatherings. People not social distancing, etc. She terribly over-estimated how well New Mexicans would combat this pandemic and now seems surprised by our numbers. I'm not.

why are you baffled? It is self centered people that assume they are healthy leaving and traveling through hot zones to get to a safer place where if they get sick and need hospitalization it won't cost them anywhere near as much.

Our work (especially right now, probably) is largely getting their profits from customers outside the state and sometimes outside the country. Not sure why the local authorities don't care, probably because without these protocol violating customers, we would not be able to remain open.

Bath & Body Works is having their SAS (semi-annual sale) in stores right now. 50% off certain items. As the sale goes on, more items get added. This sale happens every December and June.

50% off is still pretty high compared to other stores. A 10 oz. lotion/body wash is $14.50 normally.

At the sate level I think those two would possibly be important if we are talking deaths

and only applies to cases if we are talking local areas. (i,e. the poor part of the city is worst hit)

what I mean is this, my GF and I both work from home, so as long as no one in our household does something stupid (your next point)we should all be OK. On the other hand the person that works at the grocery store for minimum wage can't help but mingle with potentially infected people.

"Gain of function experiments are when a natural pathogen is taken into the lab, made to mutate, and then assessed to see if it has become more deadly or infectious.

Most countries, including Canada, don't do these kinds of experiments — because they're considered too dangerous, Attaran said.

"The Wuhan lab does them and we have now supplied them with Ebola and Nipah viruses. It does not take a genius to understand that this is an unwise decision," he said"

What’s the latest on the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest that they do in Coney Island every Fourth of July? I take it that’s cancelled too?

Thank you Penton for sharing that very informative clip.
_____

I am certain that every one here is already aware of the latest news from China.
All the world news outlets have already reported it and there are numerous videos from all over. I watched several and from 48 hours ago to just recently...few hours ago.
It's not easy the pick the best one because they are all excellent, informative, to the point, no bull shit, no trick. Some are longer others are shorter; I picked this one to share (average time) ...

For subscribers (48 hours ago, roughly) ...
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/12/w...a-updates.html

For non-subscribers (WHO) ...
https://www.who.int/news-room/detail...ublic-of-china

From China, Brazil, Germany, USA, Canada, and from all over the world (internationally); the latest news on Coronavirus (few minutes read) ...
https://www.dw.com/en/coronavirus-fr...own/a-53793212

Stay safe, wear a mask in public places, keep your distance and vigilance, exercise, eat well, practice good hygiene, brush your teeth, wash your hands, listen to Classical music (and Opera), watch good intelligent educative documentaries, entertaining flicks (Jaws, War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, ...), ... all that jazz. Live and respect, let live and protect, love and be compassionate, tell Mom and Dad you love them, and everyone else in your family (your kids and grand kids) and brothers, sisters, circle of friends. It's all good habits moving forward, the new better world is now...it's a different world where safety and prudence and good health and respect are the values to emphasize more. If it's good for you it's good for me too, and vice versa.

Enjoy the new life spinning a new tune on the turntable ... Tango music perhaps.
Dancing with the stars ...

I could see it still happening, but perhaps not with an audience (or just a very limited amount), and maybe with some sort of shield guards up between the competitors.
