For me personally, I think taking politics out of the discussion helps focus on information concerning the virus and keeps the "noise" level down. Plus, when you add those subjects into the mix, it creates a slippery slope. I see that at another HT site, I wish they had incorporated this rule into their pandemic forum.
Fair enough, I guess. What's HT? Home theatre?

There's no way you can close a country this size with so many entry points, none of which can ever be completely controlled even if it was attempted. You have people from the South pouring in even though there's walls and tight protection, a barely protected Northern border with plenty of open gaps because of terrain, shipping ports up the wazoo on both coasts, and tons of airports open for business. And if you're talking about closing businesses, how are people supposed to obtain food/water and other essentials? Close nail salons, bars and beaches, by all means, but there needs to be a certain amount of realism here.

For the sake of discussion, keep in mind that lots of COVID deaths are being attributed to other things in order to keep those death numbers down.

There's probably 10 times as many infections as reported cases in the US, the same thing applies to the death figures. Likely not 10 times as many, but it could be twice as many, three times, no one knows. And no one will ever know.

Basically, don't let rosy death numbers make you think this virus can't kill you, your loved ones or other random people out in public.

Since re-opening, our cases have still gone done here in NY. You can have an open economy and keep the number of cases down. The secret? Wearing a mask! People need to stop being stubborn and put the damn mask on!!!

Conspiracy theory? Maybe you should read more:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/20/u...a-elderly.html

Quote:
Amy Rose, a Villages resident, lost her husband, Chad, a lab technician at one of the Villages hospitals, to what she believes was the coronavirus. His death, however, was recorded as a heart attack.

She and her husband both had coronavirus-like symptoms in January after visiting Disney World when the virus raised little concern in the United States. In April, Mr. Rose, 47, who had a heart condition, suddenly collapsed after exercising.

Mr. Rose’s cardiologist told her the coronavirus had likely contributed to his heart attack by narrowing the arteries. “They said that because he had that history of a heart attack they didn’t do the autopsy. They just declared it.”

“His death was very violent,” she said, breaking down in tears. “It was awful.”
You think there aren't thousands, or tens of thousands, or even more instances of that happening? You're deluding yourself.

Oh wow, I could post lots of individual accounts of deaths from other causes that were attributed to covid. Let's not play that game. The equalizer would be comparing excess deaths and data has shown that the excess deaths are roughly equal to those on the tracking sites, sometimes higher or lower. Deaths may be as much as 30% higher or lower, but not as much as 3 times higher as you claim.

I stated that death figures could be double or triple, but it's simply not possible to know. You don't know, I don't know. If it's 30% more, that's 45K more deaths and puts the US at about 200K. It wouldn't surprise me.

My point is that the death numbers, like the infection numbers, are higher than stated, and not to let the "low" death figure give the impression the virus isn't deadly.

I wasn't trying to jump into conspiracy theory territory with my previous comment, only point out that the actual numbers are higher. I should've posted a more reasonable increased death number than double or triple, but in my haste to post, I didn't re-read the entire thing and think about how it could come across.

Well, the number of new Covid-19 cases will have a huge drop during this weekend in Florida. At least some false hope and being distracted with a Tropical Storm or Hurricane.

While Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill are still arguing over what the next coronavirus aid package should look like, they do seem to agree on one point: Americans should get another stimulus check.

“We’ve got to continue some help,” Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said.

How much and when remains up for debate, however.

Grassley said the Republicans’ plan for the next aid deal, called the HEALS Act, would set aside billions to send out another $1,200 direct payment. If you got a check the first time, you would be eligible for the second one.

Republicans and Democrats plans alike would also allow families to collect money for additional dependents, alike adults with disabilities and college students.

“We didn’t intend to leave out kids over 17 that were dependents of their parents,” Grassley said of the first payment.

But Democrats also say the GOP’s plan doesn’t go far enough.

“The more we can support putting money in people’s pocket, the greater impact it has on unemployment,” Rep. Cindy Axne, D-Iowa, said. “People go out and spend that money.”

She said Democrats would increase the payments for dependents from $500 to $1,200.

“We need to make sure that we’re putting money in people’s pocket so that they can feed their families,” she said.

Democrats also want to make all taxpayers eligible for payments, which would mean immigrants can get them, too.

Kris Cox of the Center on Budget Policy Priorities, a D.C.-based progressive think tank, said as many as 6 million people who were eligible for the initial aid are still waiting to see the money.

“More needs to be done by the IRS and advocates,” Cox said.

For now, the White House is backing the GOP plan, with President Donald Trump saying he also supports another stimulus payment.

Lawmakers continue to bicker about other parts of the next relief package and it’s unclear if they will be able to strike a deal before recessing Aug. 7.

I mean did they like halt production or something, why are only off brand potentially dangerous options available in this country right now. It is made in Ohio and in France, why the hell now 6 months later is this stuff not available anywhere? The same goes for toilet paper and paper towels, enough with the Mexican brand stuff, where the hell is bounty and Charmin you know name freaking brands... Sick and tired of this cheap crap the stores now only seem to carry

Purell has been prioritized to hospitals and other such places that need it more than regular consumers, but I believe you can find it rarely in stores too. There's plenty of legit sanitizers out there (including the one I've linked to). And toilet paper from major brands have been around for months. Go to Walmart's site and they have plenty of brands like Charmin in stock. I'm getting a pack of Scott TP from them today in fact. My 2nd order of a bulk amount since this pandemic started.

Just bought a 67.6 ounce bottle of Germ-X (the pepis of hand sanitizers) from Costco for $8 this week.
