More importantly, without taking drastic measures it is estimated that up to 2 million Americans could die. Just because one person who isn't infected isn't going to die, doesn't mean that this infected person couldn't infect a lot of other people if the infected person goes about their business as usual. And some of those people will die. Even more urgent is the fact that our healthcare system will soon be overwhelmed by coronavirus patients requiring life-saving treatment, and may start turning away a lot of other people with non-coronavirus emergencies - some people will die from things other than coronavirus because the hospitals will be overwhelmed and will most likely be turning people away. |

My grandmother is a little over 6 miles from the center of the containment zone in New Rochelle, NY. My aunt and uncle are about 2.5 miles from the center.
My employer enforced everyone to work remotely starting on Monday. I have 11 rolls of toilet paper left. This should last me a while. I get a nice order from EveryPlate every week. Three meals, 2 servings per meal. I went to the supermarket last Friday and picked up some additional things. I did get a nice bonus and raise this year, but I am still worried about the impact this virus will have months down the road. I read somewhere that Massachusetts had more people file for unemployment this Monday than the entire month of February combined. That's crazy. We could be looking at 20% unemployment across the board. The airline, food service, entertainment, cruise industries will all suffer. Mental health will eventually become an issue after so much isolation. I hope eventually we get the confidence to travel again after this ends. I saw my parents last weekend and they are doing okay. Both are retired. I guess we’ll just take it one day at a time. |

Look, we're all different. We all have different body chemistries and, yes, even people in their 30's have underlying conditions and many may not even be aware of it. The point is getting this virus does not mean you're going to die in 3 days. Some people have had it and have recovered and they never knew they were sick. Practice good hygiene, stay away from crowds and take care of yourself but go about your business. |

While the death rate is much higher than the flu, it's also much lower than is being reported, as the vast majority of cases are not tested. Also many young people show little or no symptoms, so for them the death rate would be even lower (since only sick people are being tested). Even most sick people here in the U.S. still aren't being tested due to the expense and lack of testing kits. That needs to change and soon.

It is important not to panic. Stay home from work if you can. Practice extreme social distancing and good hygiene. It's really all you can do.
But I think the general message of, "Statistically, young and healthy people are highly, highly unlikely to die from this," is often being misinterpreted as, "Young and healthy people don't really need to give a shit about this." It is critical to note that no one should be considered immune to contracting COVID-19. A baby was born with it in London. A two-year-old in the County next to mine tested positive. Are these children going to die from the virus? I have no idea, but people enjoy visiting babies. So everyone who came in contact with them is potentially exposed. And every person those people regularly work and interact with is now also potentially exposed. Many in the not-at-risk demographic haven't comprehended their role in spreading this. USA is disgracefully lagging in testing. My friend is 39 weeks pregnant. She receieved a call the night before a standard check-up visit to inform her that her appointment had been cancelled and they offered no immediate explanation. She was experiencing high blood pressure and demanded to be seen. They acquiesced, and she found out the next day, after they had her sit in a hospital room for several hours, that the nurse she'd been seeing (as recently as one week prior) tested positive for COVID-19. The advised she contact her PCP to get information for testing. The PCP told her they won't have her and bf tested since they aren't showing symptoms. Told them to stay home and not allow visitors. I was with the couple two weeks ago, and he advised against hand shaking because he "felt a little sick". I had about 8 or 9 people over my house about ten days ago, among them my at-risk father-in-law who smoked his entire life, has type II diabetes and is in his 60s. I went to work on Monday, in a trailer with roughly 30 men, to get my layoff check. Well, shit. |

I'm taking it easy going shopping till they proper hygiene measures in place. Hand sanitizer to use before and after shopping. Rigorous deep cleaning. Not so much for myself, but just minimising the risk further of contracting it, and giving it to someone old or vulnerable.

This makes me sad, especially since my father won’t listen to reason and spent every day this past week (and today) on the golf course. He’s so obsessed with golf that he’s willing to put his health and the health of my mother at risk. They are both in their 70s.

The mortality rates per age group is more relevant than the massively inaccurate the overall figure. China calculated my age group (I'm 38) has a 0.2% chance of dying. I gather China has a relatively high rate of cardiovascular and respiratory illness anyway so even that number is probably too high.
In Italy the youngest to die was in their fifties and had health issues prior to contracting the virus. |
