I am right there with you. I think I even have my old VHS copy around here someplace. I don't know if you have seen this, but hopefully it will get a great release:

I think Criterion actually has more Japanese films at the moment on BD. French is probably a close second, or they're tied.

That seem for me like a strange thing has I find pretty much everything that was nominated was mainstream with a few exception like maybe Malick who is anything but mainstream. Just last year's winner, The King's Speech is a rather mainstream movie for me, well made and well acted yes but mainstream. Even this year with The Artist I don't see the movie as being that off the stream sort of speak. So what do you consider mainstream?
I honestly have no clear idea on guidelines, or anything. You could say that anything that comes from a major Hollywood studio is mainstream, but does that mean that Ken Russell's The Devils is mainstream? It was made (or released, don't know for sure) by Warner Bros. after all.
Or just by the way it approaches its subject matter? But that's highly subjective. Some might say that 2001: A Space Odyssey is obscure, and others might say it's mainstream. I just think it's a fantastic movie, but that's beside the point. In its broadest sense 'mainstream' means almost every movie the studios release in the summer, that's about as clear as I can put it .

Wow, I would have never guessed either of those from your posts.
I'll take that as a compliment. Thank you, sir .

Maybe they want both the original and the Hollywood remake to be released?

Oh, and I vote for the Qatsi trilogy. The director confirming that it was coming is way too long ago, and Koyaanisqatsi was one of the first obscure (if you want to call it that) movies I ever saw. Pretty please?

Eww, no hollywood remake. I wasn't fully awake when I posted The Vanishing, which is what I knew it as, because TCM called it that. I totally missed that point the first time I responded to Bizzare_eye; I noticed the double Bicycle Thieves, Persona and Haxan though.

I wonder if anyone can guess which ones I picked, besides the most obvious ones.

It's just a way of gauging what people want to see Criterion release. It's on-going and always open to multiple requests.

Are they now? I admitted some of them are more blatant than others, but I'm pretty sure some are less than obvious. I already admitted to some of mine that got multiple votes, or I voted for them via alternate titles.

You couldn't get Hoop Dreams in HD - it was filmed on Betacam.

I thought it was transferred to 35mm for the theatrical run? Wouldn't that alllow it to be scanned properly at a higher rez?

It was but (as far as I know) it wouldn't make much difference because the resolution wasn't there in the first place. It would basically be an upscale.

I think It's magnificent. I really wish there was a proper US release of it. I think I've seen it more than any other movie since 2008. A good 6 or 7 times.

Lossless sound would be one reason (don't know if the movie would benefit from it), and to be fair, Inland Empire was shot on DV-CAM, and it looks better on Blu-ray. There's less compression, which does favors to even SD material.
