Or just by the way it approaches its subject matter? But that's highly subjective. Some might say that 2001: A Space Odyssey is obscure, and others might say it's mainstream. I just think it's a fantastic movie, but that's beside the point. In its broadest sense 'mainstream' means almost every movie the studios release in the summer, that's about as clear as I can put it .

Eww, no hollywood remake. I wasn't fully awake when I posted The Vanishing, which is what I knew it as, because TCM called it that. I totally missed that point the first time I responded to Bizzare_eye; I noticed the double Bicycle Thieves, Persona and Haxan though.

I thought it was transferred to 35mm for the theatrical run? Wouldn't that alllow it to be scanned properly at a higher rez?

It was but (as far as I know) it wouldn't make much difference because the resolution wasn't there in the first place. It would basically be an upscale.

I think It's magnificent. I really wish there was a proper US release of it. I think I've seen it more than any other movie since 2008. A good 6 or 7 times.

Lossless sound would be one reason (don't know if the movie would benefit from it), and to be fair, Inland Empire was shot on DV-CAM, and it looks better on Blu-ray. There's less compression, which does favors to even SD material.
