Criterion said they might look at it for a blu release next year, but I doubt if they do, it won't come until the end of next year. So I say buy the dvd. It's a great movie and I won't be mad to double-dip.

Thanks for the tip. That makes my decision easier. I have been getting some dvd's I am pretty sure won't be released anytime soon by them. If I am wrong, that will be ok, seeing how I am getting them at a great price.

Pandora's Box under $20 is a great price.

Criterion pisses my off. They announce 4 new titles with release date and gave Videodrome a half-ass announcement LONG before these new announcements. They need to give me-Dazed and Confused, Equinox, Videodrome and The Blob (McQueen).

Picked up and watched Bigger than Life this weekend. Barbara Rush's performance blew me away -- I had only previously seen her in some 'B' titles. The range of emotions she was able to convey just in body language and facial expressions was astounding.

I picked up:
M (blu)
Mystery Train (blu)
Night and Fog
Night Train to Munich

Few more possibilities yet. Just a heads up, I was on a trip to Kansas City last week and the B&N store in the Country Club Plaza had an awesome selection. due to some bad experience with dvds and flying in the past, I refrained from purchasing any titles.

I feel the same way about the set, I love David Lean films and have seen the two Lean films in the set... neither film has any notable extras, so I figure I should wait for an eventual HD release.

As for the David Lean title that is seperate, Brief Encounter that contains a good commentary track.

This B&N sale is killing me. I've got all the blus, but have been looking forward to this sale to pick up DVD's I've been missing, and thus the conundrum that everyone else is having...I hate to buy on DVD if it's going to be out on BD in the next year or so. I picked up House of Games, Hoop Dreams and My Own Private Idaho today, all long time wants; I also ordered Rossellini's War Trilogy, the three kid's shorts and Night and Fog.

Still wanted: The Night Porter, Salo, Homicide, Amarcord, Bad Sleep Well, Nanook of the North, Scenes from a Marriage, Diabolique, The Fugitive Kind and I need some Bunuel. Any opinions on which are most likely for BD release? I'd imagine Diabolique or Scenes would be likely, but I'm not sure why. Any opinion of which Bunuel is the least likely to get the BD treatment?

I can see Salo, Amarcord, Scenes from a Marriage (maybe not before other Bergman) and maybe Bad Sleep Well getting blu-rays in the next 2-3 years. Everything else is prob safe.

Get the Bunuel film The Diary of a Chambermaid, because it is going out of print, so that will not be a Criterion blu.

She was great. Nicholas Ray gets the best out of his actors.

And Salo on Blu is already available via BFI.

Go region free instead of wasting money on DVDs and you will see a lot of films that you think are not out or not in the pipeline are available in other parts of the world.

Add Ozu to the mix with the BFI as well.

What do you think about Wild Strawberries being the next Bergman film? I think we'll prob see Diabolique and a Tarkovsky film next year, although idk if the first Tarkovsky blu would be The Stalker, The Mirror, Solaris, or Rublev.

Absolutely.

[Show spoiler]There are many fine examples, but the one that probably impressed me the most was when her husband first collapses in their bedroom. She is holding him and their son comes in. She calmly instructs the boy on how to find the doctor's telephone number. Her voice is excessively calm because she's trying not to upset the boy, but the whole time she's choking back tears, her voice is quivering, and you can just feel her trying to keep a lid on her fears and emotions.

It would have been so easy to overplay that scene with simple hysterics. Instead, it's played absolutely real. And it gives us our first glimpses of the strength her character will exhibit throughout the events that follow.

Speaking of SOLARIS that would be a good title for Criterion to release on BLU. I love both versions.

It would also be cool if Criterion could get the Soderbergh remake from FOX and release it with all the cut footage. According to the commentary track from the original FOX release he was even temp tracking the original space travel dock sequence with Velvet Undergound's Venus in Furs (a well as other songs)

Are you referring solely to Criterion blu-rays? If not, since Kino owns Stalker and The Mirror maybe we'll see both of those on blu-ray sometime next year.

That would be cool, I just don't see it happening. If Criterion releases Solaris on blu, which I really think they will at some point, it will certainly be the Tarkovsky version.

I've read the book multiple times and seen both film versions multiple times. Each has a very different thematic take on the general plot and I think each has a lot of value. I personally like the Soderbergh version the best because I enjoy the love story and its thematic importance to Solaris. But, all are great and the Tarkovsky version is so full of ideas.

FOX and Criterion have a good distribution relationship, and esp with Soderbergh, so it could happen. I would rather have the original film, but it would be cool to have more extras for the remake esp deleted sequences etc.
