That Google isn't planning on a 10-bit profile for VP9 would explain the lack of details about it. It looks like Google has been overselling VP9 since when asked about a 10-bit profile they have previously said that they were working on it and the most recent example of that was their presentation at the third day of the HPA Tech Retreat.

While the lack of professional equipment is a major problem all the necessary features (bit depth, color space, and metadata) for delivering consumer video with the Rec. 2020 color space will soon be part of HEVC. Also HDMI 2.0 supports it so the pieces are starting to come together and I think it will be possible in a year or two.

An even more daunting hurdle is that of enticing theater owners to upgrade to a projector system capable of exhibiting it, which is a very expensive proposition compared to that which was needed for exhibition of the first Hobbit’s 48fps 2K 3D version.

Plus, it’s yet been shown that all projector systems can seamlessly project variable frame rate 3D material containing some HFR content without slight delay hiccups ( https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...le#post6994149 ). So getting all brand manufacturers of 3D projection systems to achieve the capability of responding instantaneously to variable frame rate content within a single motion picture is another issue which would somehow have to be solved for widespread distribution and exhibition if Avatar 2 in 3D were to include mixed (24 and 48fps) content.

Given all the above, don’t be surprised if a ‘4K 3D HFR version’ of Avatar 2 or even just a conventional 4K 3D version (totally at the traditional frame rate of 24fps) has a limited theatrical release. But, I’d pay extra money for a ticket to see it, if I could find a local theater that was showing it.
To hell with 3D. Just give me reaaaaaaaally high quality, true 4k on a huge screen with an amazing object oriented soundtrack.

Every day of tech retreat rocks as it’s a virtual cornucopia of information. It’s been sold out for something like the past 14 years. Past presentations (like during the time when Avatar was in viewers’ consciousness) given by people as diverse as Professors of Optometry from Berks….http://bankslab.berkeley.edu/ who know something or other about stereo display - http://www.journalofvision.org/content/11/8/11.full and unlike video journalists or bloggers amateurishly pontificating on the internet about human visual capabilities and 4K perception, Marty could answer the vision question as to which pathology was responsible if a patient were to present to him where refraction showed a myoptic shift of from 20/25 sph -7.75 to now 20/40 -9.25 in his OS which now has a new finding of a generalized hazy moderate cataract….and also a new finding of the formation of a thin ERM that is causing lack of the normal foveal contour.

to casual personal conversations about a corporate “giant-slayer” by the name of Mr. Chu https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...hu#post7187114

to this year, an Academy Award winner (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...sh#post8701428) conversing about the legalities of color.

The best show/conference/retreat there is, in my opinion.

Yes, a case of the tail wagging the dog, so to speak, as 2020 must be supported from acquisition (i.e. cameras) and then throughout the post production pipeline (editing, color correction monitors, etc.)….which it is not, as of yet.

I never feared 2020 not being supported by HEVC because generally a codec like HEVC doesn’t care about different colorimetry….just have the codec developer gurus review and possibly tweak the quantization matrices in order to handle the different distributions of transformed luminance data when CL (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ce#post8467171) is used and should be pretty much good to go.

And other readers should not forget that the driving force behind HDMI 1.4 -> HDMI 2.0 ((17.92Gbps aggregate) was…….

4K

Now gotta go grocery shopping as we’re having guests over at 5:00 P.M. to eat, drink and be merry while watching the Academy Awards show this evening and root for our favorites.

I’ll be back.

Now onto more crucial engineering problem solving.

Given today is Oscar Sunday , what to do ? when the Academy Awards show is about to start and you can’t find that dang corkscrew in your kitchen in order to provide vino refreshment to your oenophile guests about to arrive at the humble Oscar viewing party that you’re hosting for your family and friends?

Well, wearing some eye protection just in case something goes horribly wrong,

Start banging -

Man, talk about the *power of pizza* ……despite providing our guests with dinner before the show started (which everyone seemed to fully enjoy as there were no leftovers (filet and lobster)….then afterwards during the show, everyone got a craving for a slice or two, so I had to call out for pizza delivery after Ellen DeGeneres did her thing.

I’ll head on over there lickety split.

I couldn’t pick up your match in my neck of the woods (it was on a station I don’t receive) but, I read one post game analysis which said that your boys well represented themselves…and their city, even looking the better side of the two finalists?

Congrats on that. Sounds like your boys done good.

We certainly did. IMO, city's support was rubbish.

And just so I don’t receive any PMs from upset LG reps…..lest I forget to mention the LG Optimus G2 Pro smartphone also supports 4K recording (like the Sony and Samsung models).

Such as evidence that Vernier acuity (http://arapaho.nsuok.edu/~salmonto/v.../Lecture21.pdf) even using for their study a conservatively higher threshold of 10 arc seconds is still applicable at testing distances as far as 8 m. from a 1800 x 1440 resolution 21 inch sized display surface - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3293147/ ….something not taken into account with popular consumer-distributed outdated viewing charts from 2006 based upon the assumption that “one arc minute of resolution is “a best-case scenario” for humans possessing ‘20/20 vision’.

My personal belief as well as that of an unscientific consensus among experienced bikers whom I’ve spoken to this week that are familiar with riding that route in all types of conditions (including snow at the very top (*power* slides on a mountain bike can be challenging fun , brings back memories of offroad motorcycle enduros on the East Coast back in the day) is that there were errors in judgment on both the part of the rider and the part of the Riverside County Sherriff’s Dept. (for not being more proactive with boots on the ground, despite not knowing his exact location and/or for not at least contacting Orange County search and rescue to get additional aid/2nd opinion as to an onsite assessment as whether or not to go ). Unfortunately, that combination of events led to a fatality, a young widow (http://www.pe.com/local-news/riversi...tain-biker.ece ) and four children now without a father.

What makes the situation look kind of lousy esp. to locals familiar with the route is that family members (non-professional search and rescue types) were capable of making it up the mountain in darkness in the wee hours of the morning; whereas, the superbly equipped pro rescuers didn’t go for him.
