I'm buying a router for the first time to permanantly connect my PS3 to the internet. I'm using an ADSL modem upsatirs in my room, and I have the PS3 two floors down, in my basement.
What type of Router should I get? These 2 are on sale for 29.99 and 39.99 each respectevily for Boxing Day. http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...Flyer_Tracking http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...cking#MoreInfo Do I need to buy anything else with the router? How do I connect my PS3 on it? Any help would be appreciated! THX |

I could use a suggestion myself, I have a wireless router on my first floor (it is a D-Link) and my PS3 is upstairs and sometimes the PS3 can't connect? The odd thing is that I can take a laptop upstairs and it show a strong signal and I never have a problem, it is just with the PS3? Do I need a better router, stronger router, should I even be having a problem like this?
thanks |

You're going to get 50+ different opinions on the topic. Linksys has made good routers and they've made bad ones. Even within a model such as WRT54G there may be various versions that are very different on the inside. One version will be good while the other will be horrible. I've also heard good things about Belkin but I haven't used their routers. I've also used Netgear stuff and I've been very happy. Take a look at some of the forums at www.dslreports.com to get an idea of what people seem to be happy with and what they're not happy with.

I use a netgear router rangemax I had droped 150 on a linksys and it was the worst router ive had so I spent 79$ on the rangemax and my ps3 is in the basement and the routers on the 3rd floor and I get about 65-80% of the connection via ps3 (I also have 30mbps down) so its really not an issue of losing a couple mb. but If you dont have alot or even a decent amount of mbps download speed Id try sometihng else hope that helps

I have been using the new Belkin N1 Vision wireless router. I have no problem connecting my PS3 or any of my wireless computers to it. It is hassle free setup and my PS3 connection signal is much stronger than with my old Belkin54g router. It's a little bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Security it tiptop with all the latest protocols. I suggest it wholeheartedly!!

^^ Make sure you have a compatible router. They list all the compatible routers and types and keep everything currrent. This "universal firmware" that these folks came up with can really unlock some features in some current and older routers that the manufacterer's locked out for whatever reasons. Do a search for "DD-WRT" and you'll see tons of glowing feedback in short order. |

I'm in Canada, so we get the latest internet connections and everything right away, I have high speed 100mbps atm I think, and I can upgrade to ultra high speed for a bit more, there's also some new modem they tried pushing to me, blah blah blah, i dont need all that crap to get something downloaded 20 mins faster..........
The question still remains, do I need any adapter or network card if I leave my router upsatirs with my pc and modem with my ps3 remaining in the basement. Thx |

Your router needs to connect to your modem directly. So they have to be on the same floor. Unless you already have an ethernet cable going from your modem to your PC. In that case you just plug that cable into your router and branch out from there. Everything else can go where ever wirelessly. |

The "N" standard has not been finalized. However, most devices can be flash-upgradeable, once the standard is finished (and interim updates). 802.11n devices are backwards compatible with the 802.11g standard.
Most manufacturers' routers work just fine; it's just a matter of configuring the device correctly. That's why you see bad reviews next to good reviews for a particular device. For the PS3, a wireless router is a good option as long as the signal does not have to go through concrete walls. Being a 802.11g, the PS3 deserves a wireless connection. I'm running a 2+ year-old D-Link wireless router, and I never had a problem with connecting any of my devices. I do recommend setting up Static IPs for each device being routed. Bogdan |
