i agree about panasonic looking best and also oppo easiest to use. the oppo is also WAY better at playing files with lossless audio
I thought that the sharpness control of the Oppo 203 had a very slight effect with 1080p output, and none with UHD/4K resolution.

Did that change?

The Oppo 203 is the easiest and most user friendly out of all those players. I changed the sharpness setting +5 and it was even with the Sony x800.

It looked sharper to me in 2160p resolution.

The Oppo 103D imo is hands down the best Blu-ray only player ever made, it's easy to use and has great picture and sound. With the induction of 4k/2160p players it's hard to make 4k look better when it is already great. The will have to come out with some chip like they did with the Darbee one to be the best again. The DMP-UB900 looks way better, I know it's hard to believe but it does. The Oppo 203 is the easiest player on the market to use and for USB playback, so they remain strong with their brand. All nitpicking aside the Oppo 203 player is still an outstanding disc player and has great picture and sound, I would recommend it for most people.

You have to "donate" to the regionfreedom site. Fill out the info, send around $40 then they will send you a software update.

Is that the only way to change regions?

Go to this thread. There is a number sequence that works sometimes on some discs.

2. Sony x800 (yes better than Oppo)
3. Oppo 203 (with settings changed sharpness boost better than the Sony x800, out of the box no needs to be tweaked)
4. Samsung K8500

Best sound quality:
1. Sony x800
2. Panasonic DMP-UB900
3. Oppo 203
4. Samsung K8500

Ease of use (USB, Menu, Remote):
1. Oppo 203 (by far the best for ease of use with everything, no surprise)
2. Sony x800 (fairly simple to access everything with remote)
3. Panasonic DMP-UB900 (pain in the butt to get subtitles on with remote, otherwise would be #2, easy to use overall)
4. Samsung K8500
I have a lot of trouble taking these impressions seriously. First of all, sound quality should be identical on any player using HDMI audio. Second, the sharpness setting on the Oppo has been confirmed to do nothing for 4K.

Than take the audio list out if you believe all audio is equal using HDMI, they are just my impressions of these players. Everyone is going to have a different opinion it's just that so take it with a grain of salt.

The Oppo 203 looked so much better with the sharpness boost +5.

Why not use Source Direct? I initially found the Oppo blurry but it was the player incorporating noise reduction and stuff. Source Direct is giving me a fabulous picture.

Have you had problems playing any UHDs on the Oppo? I've heard Sicario can be a bit of a problem?

Sicario works perfectly fine on the OPPO UDP-203 along with every other title I have tried. I see no difference between source direct or 4K auto when playing a native 4K disc. Only when using source direct with non 4K sources one can see a difference since tuning on source direct bypasses the Blu-ray player upscaling.

On pages 34, 36, and 37 of the April/May 2017 Widescreen Review magazine is an excellent professional review on the Panasonic DMP-UB900. One of the reasons why the Panasonic is one of the most expensive Blu-ray players is because of its build quality and high quality video and audio performance. Its one of the best Blu-ray players on the market as long as one does not need legacy audiophile optical disc playback support like DVD-AUDIO and SACD’s which cannot be played on the DMP-UB900.

Select quote from the Widescreen magazine review:

“Music played in PCM mode over HDMI sounded a little better overall on the Panasonic and OPPO machines than the Samsung player. Via the analog stereo outputs, the differences were a little more obvious, with the Panasonic sounding a little different than the OPPO, and both of them sounding noticeably better than the Samsung.”

The only problem with the UB900 is that you can't chip it for multi-region BD playback (ditto most of Panasonic's recent players). Very irritating indeed.

Yes, it's a huge shame that the custom multiregion firmware is only available from a certain site, the name of which I shall not utter here. If a hardware mod was available then that'd do in a pinch, though I've not had the greatest time of it with hardware mods over the years.

I'm leaning heavily towards this Panasonic player - I was hoping for an all in one solution but I can always keep my old Oppo for region free BD and SACD etc. I was going to sell it to offset the cost but these seem to be a very decent price at the moment.

If the player you have is either the Oppo 103 or 103D that's region free than yes I would keep it and get the Panasonic DMP-UB900 for 4k UHD BD, BD playback. Regular Blu-ray upscaled to 4k looks amazing on the DMP-UB900.

Yes it really does do excellent upscaling, my GOT blurays look very 4k

Oh, it's older than that, its the humble BDP80 but it plays Region A and B as well as SACD so it's too handy to discard. Just have to figure out if it's worthwhile as 90% of my movie watching is going to be on a 1080p projector.

For anyone in the Boston area, the South Bay Mall has an open box one for like $330.. Or $360.. I can't remember exactly. I saw it yesterday.
