Well you’ve done your part ; however, since it seems many here are interested in chasing quality, it would be nice if some industrious fellow whose out of school or off work for the summer could do a mini-tutorial on how to get the best out of one’s Ultra HD Blu-ray movies by utilizing the free test patterns provided on the Sony discs. Pity for consumers to look a gift horse in the mouth, when they’re free. For example, might especially want to get into the white levels starting with Chapter 20.

Heck, with a little ingenuity one can also access them with the Sammy Ultra HD Blu-ray player if that’s what most are using.

Yep so you wouldn't need to update your receiver....

Honestly, I would rather save that money and invest in a OLED TV. Why? Well compare a UHD movie on a 4K LED TV vs 1080 bluray movie on a OLED display, and you tell me which one looks better

Why is there a firmware update when the player isn't even out yet?

I bought the player day one in Sweden and that was April 22. Paid 8990 SEK ($1100). Still sells for 8990 SEK, but most of the retailers are out of stock.

It is in other countries, as discussed a couple posts above yours (and has been for a while)

The tutorial would probably be more readily understood by all Panasonic and Samsung Ultra HD Blu-ray owners by writing in simple words like those used to describe the previous test signals with HD Sony Blu-ray movie discs back in the day (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ol#post1432708) , which eventually came to fruition about 2½ years later as announced with an exclusive Blu-ray.com forum heads-up (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ls#post4453123), e.g. a composition from back in the day……

To access them you go to the main menu and press 7669 (SONY) on your remote. The first test pattern is the SMPTE color bars. Through a blue filter the level of the blue should match the white and the blue in the cyan should match the blue in the magenta. In the lower left right corner there is a small white bar on the black background that should be barely visible. The easiest colors to see errors in are white and yellow. The white should be color free and the yellow should be a rich lemon yellow. None of the bars should look neon in color or washed out.

The second test pattern is a resolution chart based on ISO-12233. The text on your screen should be sharp and no sign of color should be present in this image. The thin wedges radiating in a circle should be sharp with minimal patterning in the circle. The next test pattern is a gray ramp. This pattern should be black and white only and be very smooth with no obvious steps in it. If it has color the color of white is not uniform or correct. Bit depth is not perfect if this ramp is not smooth. The final pattern is a white on black field crosshatch. All of the edges should be sharp and each square should be the same size. All lines should be either vertical or horizontal. No color should be present in this image.

Flash forward to 2016 as color and dynamic range delivery have evolved/progressed, compared to thee above ^ the Sony Ultra HD Blu-ray discs contain more/different calibration stuff for users.

^ Pity that there isn't a similar bit depth checker in UHD though, that would've been extremely useful for checking just what is happening re: banding on these UHD discs. A UHD sharpness pattern would've been awesome too.

Don't get me wrongo Mr P, I'm not looking the proverbial equine in the mouth as the colour slides alone have helped me to confirm that my set is receving the wider colour by gamut, so it's been a great help. But by not including UHD upgrades of some patterns that were on Blu before it seems like a bit of a missed opportunity.

I've done my best on my home forum to explain with regards the dialling in for HDR on the jvc using the patterns. Really just passing on what have learnt off some good folks that have taken time to share themselves

Purrty good….has anyone out there with a 4K HDR flat panel capable of a higher peak brightness output (compared to consumer front projectors) care to give it a shot in order to help fellow owners improve the picture quality of their display chain?

Are all HDMI inputs on that TV HDCP2.2 compatible? Did you try to test the player hooked to the others HDMI entrances?
