Oooh...them offering the multiregion DVD version too means there's a good chance that the handset hack will work on it just like the standard BD decks. Nice, I can save myself a whole tenner!

Not sure I need the multiregion BD though, I mean I've got a TPS-modded Panny already but region A discs make up a relatively small part of my collection and seeing as I'll be buying region free UHDs for new releases here on out I don't need to double up on MR players.

I have asked them when they should despatch Geoff and will update once I get the information

Scratch that, had a response that they are unsure at the moment whether the DMP-UB900 can be modified or not. Maybe best to keep our orders in with Superfi?

Oh. That's weird. It was just an assumption on their part I guess, but I've got my one-for-all remote programmed and ready to rumble anyway. So many of my BDs are B or region free as I said above, but I've got a larger share of R1 DVDs in my DVD collection so having that would still be very handy.

I still have a number of R1 DVD's in my collection and do import the odd BD. Got a crisis going on the moment and questioning myself as to why I buy as much dross as I do. I had a look last night and reckon I could trim my collection by as many as 500 movies

Maybe becoming middle aged has made me re-evaluate things a little more, not sure. Still looking forward to getting this and after the Samsung gave me a taster

90% of my BDs are imported from the US. So multi-region is essential. Looking for a state of the art BD player to replace my aging BD-55.

If you are not too bothered about UHD BD, there is a Panasonic Player that I picked up recently :

You could have a look at this one matey. Even sold my Oppo BDP103D and got this, excellent player for the money. Hope this helps

That's a great machine. Unfortunately I need analogue audio outputs because my Denon 3805 amp is a little dated too.

Need a new player, but only got a non-4k Epson TW6000 projector at the moment. Gonna be a year or so before you upgrade the projector, maybe a bit longer. Worth getting this in preparation though, or buying a standard blu ray player?

I agree with this, if you're goig to be waiting a year+ before going 4K then there's no point picking up these 1st gen players. In a years plus time there will be new players, likely to be better than the 1st gen ones and maybe cheaper too. Just wait it out until you're ready and stick with a cheap BD player until then.

So having done a little bit of research it seems that nobody is - as yet - able to chip this player for multi region BD playback. That's the dealbreaker (I was already on the fence about UHD in general). There's nothing to see here yet.

I dunno how much better they'll be in terms of basic performance - this situation is nothing like the slow assed PC-in-a-box nature of the first BD and HD players - but features like Dolby Vision and the Digital Bridge (boy, it's been quiet on that front) will make the later players more 'complete' for sure.

Samsung couldn't get rid of any more sockets if they tried for any newer models (apart from the 2nd HDMI, I guess) but there's certainly scope for the more well endowed Panasonic to be greatly slimmed down over time.

When the MediaTek UHD SoC arrives then the shrinking of dimensions will begin in earnest I think, although Oppo will naturally buck that trend with their inevitable UHD tank. I like their idea of a cheaper 'transport' type machine without all the gadgets and gizmos though, that'd be a very cost-effective way of getting their UHD player without all that internet stuff, the multi-channel DACs and so on. Just gimme something that plays discs, thanks.

Yeah Oppo likes that high-end audiophile stuff & they like to include it in their players for an extra "chunk" of change. lol
