http://www.thedigitalbits.com/column...ts/010716_1830 Odd choice. Technically it's probably more difficult to decode high bitrate HEVC than to decode Blu-ray 3D MVC. Can $499 really be true? Compared to the Samsung player the Panasonic offers a lot more so I guessed it would be more expansive. |

Lots chatter here about "willing to pay a fortune". That's the fastest way to kill this format. Blu-Ray played that game, and a decade later it's still struggling to get off the ground.
The manufacturers are at it again. With players costing as much as a low-end television, and the studios trying to get folks to go on-line to play a movie, they're trying to go "bleeding edge elitists are suckered into this" mode. I can't tell if they're dancing with joy or hopping because they shot themselves in the foot again. The big guys are standing around, wondering who is going in the water first. |

I don't understand no Dolby Atmos support as even normal Blu-ray players will currently pass Dolby Atmos to Dolby Atmos enabled receivers. Now I would understand if they said it does not pass Dolby Vision but it certainly should handle Dolby Atmos which is just an audio function.

Until OPPO or Sony release a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, most likely this Panasonic DMP-UB900 might be the best one on the market once it is released. Will need to wait for a professional review to make sure. Also in theory 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles when played in a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player should play at 1080P resolution when connected to any old 1080P display. Those owning 4K Ultra HD equipment with HDCP 2.2 will be able to experience 3840 x 2160 resolution.
Also it would be nice to see most or all the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players supporting 1080P Blu-ray 3-D discs. So far that appears to be the case. I personally would not purchase a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player unless it supports Blu-ray 3-D. Hopefully they all will support Blu-ray 3-D like the Panasonic model. All modern Blu-ray players that bitstream support Dolby ATMOS and DTS X. This should be a non issue.

Unfortunately, $499.00 is the low end of the range for price ideas, the price idea from most sources is $800.00 (probably higher in the U.K.) I hope he is right about availability in the U.S. in April. Others think that April will be for Europe, with an intro in the U.S. to come later.
