Honestly, the Panny is not worth the extra bucks, when PQ is virtually the same on both this device and the Sammy

Reading all the Samsung impressions most people can't get the same image out of two identical Samsung players

Too many factors involved...TV they use, ambience lights, calibration, bluray settings

  • Compatible with NextGen UHD Blu-ray HDR
  • Meets CEA 4K UHD Connected and HDR Compatible definitions

Sure, that's because it has the newest HDMI chipset an can accept a signal from a UHD player which makes it compatible but not a UHD TV. My Vizio is the same and could be marketed that way too. Like the Vizio, it can accept the signal, but won't display wide color or HDR.

So what should I expect when I play HDR content on this 4K TV?? Is it just going to show a pitch black screen with just audio and no video?

I read a professional review with the reviewer using the same settings, same TV, same everything, for both players, and his final verdict was that even though the Panavision comes with more "fluff", PQ-wise both players are equal.
I couldnt care less if the Samsung feels flimsy, or if the remote is very cheaply made...How is the UHD picture looking?

The HDR gets converted to standard range by the player, and not sure how the color is converted. Someone may want to chime in on that technical aspect. What you end up is 4k resolution, but without HDR or wide color.

As I posted before in this thread, it was just a hair more detailed on a 55' 4k non-hdr or wide color tv. It's not really even worth mentioning. No casual viewer would notice. Video games are a different story though.

So at this stage, we are not missing out much and we can still get a picture far above HD 1080 regardless of HDR

The thread here on this page where owners are doing nothing but complaining about issues

I only have two issues with this player, and I am sure this is due to something I am doing wrong. The player is totally fine.

Are you using a UHD player for the 40 JS6400 that you mentioned?

I haven't received the 40 JS6400 yet (ordered from Amazon, should be here tomorrow)...
My two issues with the player are non-UHD related

What I mean is: we got our Samsung TV (Vizio for you) set up, UHD players (Samsung or Panny, whatever) we now try to play some HDR content....Are we still going to get stunning 4K resolution that even a child could tell apart from HD 1080, or are we gonna get a dark, muddy picture, with no detail and with movie scenes that all look like they have all been shot in the dark, due to the HDR to SDR down-conversion?

The HDR to SDR conversion looks almost identical to playing a BD. You won't notice the resolution difference on a 40.' You won't be able to tell a them apart. In short, don't waste your time getting a UHD player for this TV.
