There are no discs but there are streams, why would they worry about supporting something non existent

DV discs will be here between fall and xmas. Its strange that the player would support DV streaming but not discs, considering both will get carried through HDMI to the player. So im curious if Robert mispoke about it, or he could have possibly gotten bad information. OR maybe the player will be upgradable to DV after all. Lots of questions and no answers right now.

The player is out now, there are no discs now.
It's not some major leap

I'm actually double checking my information on Panasonic's DMP-UB900 to be sure it passes Dolby Vision streamed content.

When the player arrives here in the states will any free movies be provided, especially at that price point?

What´s the point on spending 700 dollars on a UHD BR Player thad does not support DV? In six - ten months after its release it will be obsolete.

I wouldn't care if it cost 100 - 200 dollars and then need to buy a new one for the DV thing but 700 dollars....

I´m so tired about upgrading. I prefer to wait.

Hi Robert,

I know this is the wrong thread, but can you also please see if the new Philips player supports Dolby Vision on-disc and by streaming? There still seems to be a lot of vague information out there on a player due to be released next month.

Thanks,
Bryan

Carlos2992, I undersstand and appreciate your feelings, but for many of us we just want to see the best images our new 4K display can deliver and Blu-ray is the premium fuel for these high-end 4K TVs. BTW, only some Vizio and LG TVs can display DV and from what I've personally viewed HDR10 looks stunning on all of Sony's, Samsung's, and LG's 2016 high-end TVs. So I don't think we'll be missing much with one of the new 4K BD players.

My take on this is I'm glad we have a new TV system and most of the standards are set, we have P3 color that can be pushed to BT.2020 color, we have HDR10 as our SMPTE HDR standard that all HDR graded content must support and the new EOTF that delivers luminance levels that mimics the human visual system. All beautifully displayed on 10-bit panels that render the image with 1024 steps of illumination.

I have 2 Samsung 4K BD players at home and I'm anxious to get Panasonic's new high-end 4K player so I can use the discrete 7.1 analog audio outputs and have a quality full sized back-lit remote control. I love the design and build quality of Panasonic DMP-UB900.

@bfeer1, just spoke with Philips/Funai yesterday and they are launching through Best Buy and at this moment they do not have any details to publicly address.

Rocky, not sure which 2016 Vizio series are Dolby Vision capable, but I believe the 65" "R" series and most of the sizes of the "P" series. Unfortunately, the only HDR they are capable to decode is DV, they will not decode the SMPTE base standard HDR10.

I believe Vizio will have an upgrade to decode HDR10, but check with Vizio techs support for the definitive answer.

So what you said (translated in layman terms) means that UHD movies (in HDR) won't play in HDR on a Vizio P (which was the model I was shooting for)

Yes, that is correct. You can stream Netflix "Marco Polo" in DV HDR, but no other HDR content.

I assume Vizio will upgrade their 2016 TVs to accommodate the SMPTE HDR10 base layer standard, but this should be confirmed with Vizio tech support.

Some people prefer to think of only now and in the past. Not 6 months or a year from now.

That is crazy they would release a Dolby Vison tv but not include the HDR-10 standard a lot of media uses.

Not yet, but Vizio's CTO posts at AVS Forum, and he said two updates are in the works-- the first for HDR10 over HDMI for Blu-ray; the other to enable HDR10 for streaming sources. No timetable has been given besides the original estimate of 90-120 days after product launch, which was late March.

I have the P65 model and have been able to cast Mad Max: Fury Road and Man of Steel from Vudu, and Marco Polo from Netflix, in Dolby Vision. Casting works well enough, but I'd much rather have a disc playback option instead. The upcoming Philips player is said to support both DV and HDR10, so it's definitely piqued my interest despite being a butt-ugly box design...

True story:
For an entire week I couldnt figure out why my perfectly HDMI-connected UHD Samsung player and Vizio D would only play at 1080...I tried everything and spent several hours between Samsung and Vizio customer service...In the end, and to my dismay, I realized that only ONE hdmi port on the Vizio is 4K@60hz, whereas all other hdmi ports are 4K@30hz

I have a Vizio D and the Vizio P was going to me my next upgrade because I heard its quality is near-OLED stuff

I don't have an OLED, but I can say the black levels on the P65 are pretty much what you want them to be for dark-room viewing. Jet black bars on widescreen material. A hell of a lot better than my LG plasma. Vizio just released a new bug-fix f/w update this week which even improves the algorithm for the FALD backlight, reducing localized blooming (which was minimal to begin with) and making the blacks even better.
