Question for Panasonic 900's owners:

'Deepwater Horizon', the 4K Blu-ray version; for the ones who have that disc, how was it? ...The entire experience, opperation.

The movie itself was solid. They did a good job keeping the suspense and intensity up. The BP characters were a little cartoonish (like "har har we are corporate greed bullies"). Inhale 5.1.2 Atmos setup and the sound mix is very sturdy and impressive. Nice film grain on the video and cinematography was top notch. I have Sony z9d and love hdr.

Thank you very much both.

DJJez; you said you had zero problems playing that 4K disc with your 900.
Then some UHD players can play it without interruptions, like your Pana UB900. That's good to know...very good.

* I liked that flick; I watched it on regular Blu-ray. The filmmaker and his crew and the actors all did a great job. ...Sound and picture are terrific, and of course no interruptions from the regular Blu-ray.

How is the 900 in terms of playing standard BDs?

I know there is a lot of debate about whether the 900 or the 203 is the better product in terms of playing 4K BDs. I think the general consensus, however, is that the 900 takes the edge.

However, being that I only see myself having Mad Max: Fury Road as my only UHD for quite some time, I'm mainly interested in playback of regular BDs.

I think they look great. I think the 203 may do DVD better, but I might watch 1-2 of those a year.

The 900 produces a stellar image.

I think it's an excellent upscaler but it needs a little bit of adjustment to tone down the sharpening added by the scaling, Edge Correction to +1 is what I recommend using (having viewed the various patterns on Spears & Munsil 2nd Ed as reference).

Thanks for the responses, folks. One more question for you all.

I'm thinking of either purchasing the LG 55" OLED or the Sony 55" X930D. How's the player's compatibility with either of these TVs?

I went from a VT50 to a 65" 930C, to a 65" LG OLED. OLED all the way.

I've read on avs some people reporting the latest 1.69 update has improved Blu-ray scaling, what's your feedback on that DJJez?

I ask because I may well become a UB900 owner soon.

I wanted to jump the gun on the UB900 but with such a high price point, no support for Dolby Vision is killer since we all know Disney will be supporting that format come late 2017 when they finally adopt the 4k standard.

I think I'll wait for the new LG player coming out which supports both HDR and Dolby Vision and has a much better price point then this.

On a purely objective level the test patterns on Spears & Munsil look exactly the same as they did before, +1 is still needed on Edge Correction to remove luma ringing.
