Your praise made me get this player and I got the Oppo 203 first. I'd say this is a hair better than the Oppo for picture quality and upscaling and it's far better for sound. A hair better isn't much but it's still me saying it's a hair better than something Oppo related. The Oppo 203 is better for USB and menu, ease of use. This has so far the best picture quality on any Ultra HD player I have seen, so I agree. The Oppo 203 is still a fantastic made player all itself, you can't go wrong with either player. The display on the UB900 is a thing of beauty really, love it. Overall the Panasonic UB900 is an awesome player!

It's easier to find cheaper, cheaper to make region free, sharper picture, better up-scaling. Better processing options for sharping and reducing edge ringing. Not as many problems. Better sound profiles. Also has better non HDR picture |

And yes, it is a very good player but one tiny, simple thing is stil bothering the hell outta me. Why can't the automatic stand-by function not be turned off?! Whenever I pause a movie for more than 20 or so minutes, the player shuts itslef down and I don't want that. ![]() |

I thought Automatic stand-off function can be turned off as well. I'm at work now but I'll double check. |

Did you happen to find out if the automatic standby can be switched off?

![]() If I have time left I will play around with those UHD/HDR demos on USB stick and see if they work. Edit: new Deep Colour Output settings, they are: -Auto 12-bit priority -Auto 10-bit priority -Off HDR picture adjustment must be nice for those who watch during the daytime or just find the picture too dim in general, personally I think I'll just leave it at the standard "0" setting. Finally we get 4K USB playback in mkv and ts containers too! A 4K m2ts clip also worked.
The 10-bit is useless for me as my TV hasn't got enough bandwidth to accept 10-bit 4:4:4 (and 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 aren't part of the HDMI 2.0 spec for sub-50/60p 4K material) so it just defaults to the regulation 12-bit 4:2:2 output for 4K24. No gain, no loss. ![]() I noticed that the HLG to PQ (HDR10) transcoding feature as seen on the newer models in the HDTVtest video is not present, however the player has no issues playing the HLG demo clips from demo UHD-3D so perhaps that's just HLG's famed backwards compatibility in action. |

Have you tried it recently? My various HDDs work fine (1TB is my biggest) BUT it takes the player about 30 seconds or so to recognise them, it may just look like it's doing nothing but trying plugging it in and leaving the player to chew on it, see what happens.

Obviously it's going to be an awful pain to move all that data and it might not solve anything (some just aren't compatible), but I'd check your drive with your PC to see if it's MBR or GPT. So I'd advise a bit of caution! |
